It's been a while since I posted my first back burner stories blog. Since then, some stories have been finished, and others have been added to the back burner. Here's a few of those new stories I'm currently working on. :)

Better Than Living in a Box

In this story, a transgendered girl discovers the cardboard box she had been sleeping in had flooded with rainwater. She abandons the box and wanders through the dark until she finds an open garage and goes back to sleep. In the morning, she is woken by the garage owner. At first the owner is angry and orders the girl out, but then she notices she reminds her of her lost daughter and decides to take her in instead.

Broken Voice

In this story a father enters his son's treehouse. He notices his son has been crying and there's shredded music sheets on the floor. When he asks what's wrong, his son says he was kicked out of choir because his voice is breaking. The father tries to console his son by saying it's something that happens to all guys. The son then blurts out he's not a guy. When the father tries to get his son to explain what he meant, the son tries to backpedal, but eventually reveals how he doesn't feel like he's a guy.

Partial Recall

The spastic psychedelic colors swimming in front of my eyes, combined with whirring sounds that kept shifting from one ear to the other, was making me dizzy, and a little sick. Just when it seemed like my stomach was about to climb up through my throat, something slid up my face and over my head.

The lights were replaced by a darkness deeper than I could have ever imagined. When the ringing in my ears faded, I noticed the faint sound of someone breathing nearby. It took a little longer before my eyes adjusted enough to see I was in a dark room, and someone was crouched in front of me,

"What's going on?" I asked.

A soft finger covered my lips as a feminine voice whispered, "Shhh, not so loud."

I reached up and pushed the hand away from my face, then asked in a quieter voice, "Who are you, and what are you doing here?"

"My name is Linda Fuentes. Before I answer your second question, can you tell me who you are?"

"I'm ..." Just as I was about to say Ellen Turner, a memory floated up from somewhere, and I said, "I'm Jake Emerson."

Shower Surprise

This is about a man who works as a "mobile stripper for hire". He starts off assuming his next job will be at a wedding shower, but it isn't until he arrives on site and sees the outfit he's expected to wear that he realizes it's actually a baby shower ... and he's the baby.

The Magic Swingset 2b (different from The Magic Swingset 2 in the previous back burner post)

The door burst open and Mom almost slipped on the bathroom rug when she skidded to a stop. "What's wrong?" she asked as he face went from scared to confused. "Why were you screaming like that?"

I knew the truth probably wouldn't go over too good, so I said, "I ... umm ... saw a spider."

Mom frowned a little. "Since when have you been afraid of spiders?"

"I ain't afraid of spiders. I mean, I usually ain't afraid of 'em, but this was a really huge one."

"Is that why you're standing in front of the toilet with your pant down?" she asked as she folded her arms across her chest.

The shock of finding a part of me had gone missing was starting to wear off. I quickly pulled up my briefs and pajama bottoms when I realized I was standing there half naked before I looked up and nodded to my mom.

"And you weren't trying to pee like a boy again?"

"Uh ... no," I answered, feeling my chest tighten.

Mom almost looked like she was about to call me on telling a lie. Instead, she bent over and let her arms drop as she peeked into the toilet bowl.

After a few seconds of looking at nothing, she put the seat and lid down, then stood back up. "Well, whatever was in there seems to be gone now. As soon as you're done, make sure you wash your hands and come downstairs. Breakfast is ready and I don't want you running off to school without eating again."
