Road to Myself - 20: Mammograms
Annette MacGregor

I've heard the stories. You know, the ones that go "you take your boobs and put them between two metal plates, and drop an anvil on them"... Funny, huh.

What brought this on, you say? Well, my annual physical was Wednesday, and my doc wanted me to get a first mammogram. She's a little concerned due to the family history of prostate cancer...

Luckily I talked this over with my therapist and found out what's needed to get insurance to cover it (I'm not on my work's insurance, yet - still on my wife's plan as the price is better and with the exception of trans benefits it's a good plan)... It has to be coded to Gynomastia (Male breast delvelopment) and it has to be a "diagnostic" exam, not a routine screening. Okay, I could deal with that...

My exam was this morning. I did go there with some trepidation. My wife/daughter had told me it was mostly uncomfortable rather than painful, but I'd heard that story... I needn't have worried. Yes, it was uncomfortable (The girls are NOT designed to be squished that way!) but pain was far from severe! Two squishes per side, very professional assistance in getting things into the right position. One benefit from a diagnostic rather than screen mammogram is that the radiologist looks at it right away (and if needed immediatly orders extra x-rays or ultra sounds, etc. if needed). Well, she looked at the four shots and came and told me they showed normal development and were apparently nice and healthy. :-) Good news, of course. She also wished me well.

So - all went well, right? Well, sorta. There was one OTHER thing that happened. Turns out that the mother of one of my older daughter's friends throughout public school (K-12) worked there (I thought she was in a different office, they have three, but she was apparently filling in for someone). She's the one that escorted me from the waiting room to where she took me to a changing room mwhere she told mme to take off the shirt and bra - and put on the gown (opening front)... She did acknowledge she knew me, but nothing else. We haven't seen much of her for a good many years - our daughters went their own ways after high school and we had no other "connection". I'm going to work under the assumption that she'll be professionnal and not say anything, but... I could be well and truly out, couldn't I. Time w1ll tell.

Being outed like this - is something that's always been a risk. Perhaps the event will turn out to have a silver lining? One can hope.

Thanks to all two dozen readers. I appreciate all of your clicks. :-)

What's next? How will my trip to DC (Arlington, VA) go? Time will tell. In any event, if you got this far, thank you. If anything I've said strikes up questions please ask. (Not that I expect anyone to get this far, mind you... LOL)

If she does out you, you'd

If she does out you, you'd have some recourse. That falls under patient confidentiality rules.

I'm a consultant for several doctors, and even though I'm not an employee, I still don't discuss anything I hear with people outside of the office. (well, anything medical related.)

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

My Last Mammogram

Was 2 days ago. I was getting them sort of randomly; my feeling (unsupported by evidence/science) is that my breast tissue started growing 20 years ago, so (guess) my breasts should be like those of wimyn in their 30s. Last year, the same technician asked me, among with other questions, when I had my last period. I told her I never had one because I had been transsexual; that info is in my records, anyway. She didn't bat an eye.

I decided I would get the mammograms when asked just to keep my PCP Dr. happy. They are free, anyway. I have a medicare HMO, all the less expensive lab work, x-rays, etc. are free, but the last time I had a catscan, I had to pay quite a bit.

I had to get 4 pictures of each breast because of my implants. We were just talking; I told her the implant Dr. had made them twice as big as I wanted. She said something about everyone with implants, tells the same story. The way she said it was sincere, like she really believed us, not that we were all saying that as an excuse.

She would be very foolish to risk her job and maybe more

"I'm going to work under the assumption that she'll be professional and not say anything"
I think that's a good assumption. The medical confidentiality laws are quite strict now. She would be very foolish to risk her job and maybe more.

A Nice ride around Manchester to finish off the Sparkle weekend.

I suppose I'll have all that to come. I've only been self medicating for 16/17 months but my doctor knows about the pills. He organises blood tests so I suppose he'll get around to a mammogram if I raise the issue. At the moment, my next hurdle is a bra fitting Sept 9th, John Lewis, Oxford Street that my niece has organised. I think she's just relishing the fun but I must admit, I'm quite looking forward to it. At the moment I'm wearing 36 B bras and I almost fill the cups.

If I wear a push-up bra I get a respectable cleavage even if it is 'divide and rule' That is, there is a noticable gap between the mounds. However with a push-up, my boobs do spill very sl;ightly over the cups.

Ah well, happy boob growing.

XZXX.

Annual Mammogram

In October I will be having my fourth mamogram. I have implants and the procedure requires the implants to be moved so a good picture can be taken. I've serously have been talking with an engineer friend of mine to see if the could have the mammogram changed to look like a bra cup, but expandable to different breast sizes.
I think that men should have their gonads checked with the same equipment used for a mammogram.
My primary care pays for my mammograms (The VA) and I have been getting them annually, so far so good. Genetics may be against me, Breast Cancer is strong on my dads side of the family. Each mamogram that come out clear lets me take a big sigh. I had a bump on my left breast, it was scar tissue buildup from an injury in the 70's.
As for being outed, if you are get an attorney for her disclosure. If she is a friend from your childrengrowing up and having friends, maybe its time to renew that friendship.

Gamma Ray Mammography

Something you might look into is Gamma Ray based Mammography...

This Article/video Describes the advantages... Sadly, it's been slow acceptance by radiologists...

But, I've seen several devices that use significantly less force (under 25%) of traditional devices...

Slow acceptance by radiologists

Those radiologists might be just be teensy bit concerned about dosage, and also the risk of irradiating the examiner?

Gammas are really nasty, and it is not a good idea to let any sort of level into human tissue. They are highly penetrating, so shielding everyone else is also an issue. Our gamma source - with relatively low activity - sat in a lead bucket with 3-inch thick walls.
