Egyptian military performs 'virginity tests'

According to a report by an international activist group, the Egyptian military is accused of performing "virginity tests" on detained female protesters. The 2011 Egyptian revolution, which forced former president Hosni Mubarak out of power, has resulted in the military controlling the country until elections later this year. Like most military minds, excess is excused as military necessity. The more conservative the basis of the culture, the worse the excesses.

One wonders...

One wonders how they can perform said test...

After chats with my wife and her gynecologist... Apparently there's a large percentage of "natural" girls who's hymen either doesn't form - or rips as they grow... And, there's a very small, but existent group who's hymen apparently "heals" itself periodically.

Some girls who are very active have their hymen broke during sports such as horseback riding and gymnastics type where a fall can do it as well as bike riding.

...while informative, it's really missing the context. No one has the right 'check the virginity' of a woman; not even her husband, although most couples discuss their history, but in the broader context of their lives before they met. This is a disgusting, misogynistic and outrageous violation (forgive the word) of their human rights; ironic since the women represent those rights in protest. I know you mean well, but you don't need to provide a health lesson to the folks here; more to the point,we are angry and frustrated that this barbaric act took place.

I NEVER said

that anybody has any right to violate a woman's privacy. I believe that these tests are wrong.

She never said you did, Stanley.

We all either have or had a hymen, wished we had one when we were little, or understand what one is. The information you provided is unnecessary since we already know it. Of course, Andrea believes that you feel that the tests are wrong; that was the whole point of the blog. It's really okay, Stan, but I think her point is that you don't have to remind women, trans or no, of who they are; as nice as that might seem. We're quite aware of what we either have or missed having, and to continually remind us of these things does hurt a bit, even if it is unintentional. Anne

Not to mention

Horse Riding and maybe camel riding (?) can cause the hymen to break...there are a lot of physical activities that can make it happen...how are they checking the men? *SIGH*

Presumably by asking

after all men wouldn't tell lies would they?

It's about suppression of women who were seen to be getting too big for their boots. However, in Saudi Arabia they'd have suppressed them with guns. Even driving a car there is an offence if you're female - go figure.

At least in Saudi Arabia ...

... women are able to drive cars even if it's not actually permitted in practice. I would think riding a bike is impossible in all those robes even if it's officially permitted ... which I doubt. Mind you, cycling in sand is tricky :)
