Blank screen of death

I got to work tonight and turned on my laptop just like I do every night and when I look at the screen it is totally blank. I've tried a couple things and low and behold nada. Fortunately the computer is still working, and if I stare intently at the screen I can make out a faint outline of what is appearing on the screen of my laptop. I planned on replacing it later this year, but not right now. Unfortunately I also need it this weekend.

I hate unexpected expenses.

Edit changed black to blank.

Sounds like the backlight

Sounds like the backlight has gone out. You have a few options for fixing it if you wish...

The simplest if you need to use it mobile still, is to buy a broken laptop of the same make/model/configuration on ebay that has a working screen but broken something else, and swap the screen.

You can also probably pick up a new screen either new or used (already striped) for $25 to $100 depending on the specifications... Possibly more $$ if it's a REALLY nice, High Resolution LCD.

The simplest option of all is this. Connect an external monitor!

A used LCD or CRT can be a great fix if you need to use the laptop but can keep it stationary.

The absolutely most difficult option, is to replace the backlight itself, but honestly, it's usually just as inexpensive and much easier to replace the whole screen.

P.S. to a geek, Black Screen of Death, usually refers to a Linux Kernel Coredump... It's the Linux version of Window's Blue Screen of Death... Both fall under the category BSoD!

That's what I thought Val was talking about in the headline. Linux. :) Macs have the equivalent which is sometimes a WSoD.
