On a bike you're only a hearbeat away from disaster, it only takes a momentary lapse of concentration by the rider or other road user for tragedy to occur.

Biking

It seems odd for grown people to be so concerned about riding bicycles. Despite the fact that Greg LeMond lives just a few miles from me in the same small suburb, I haven't been on a bike in years. I do have an old Trek mountain bike hanging in the rafters of my garage. One of my sons was into bike racing in his youth, both highway racing and motocross. Another son worked out for a couple of years with the Yale team. But, by and large, adults on bikes in America are the exception. We love our cars, don't have the needed facilities, have few laws enacted to help two-wheeled transportation, and are all the more obese because of it. We also have a very efficient oil and gas industry who are subsidized by our government to the extent that we pay far less for our auto habit than people in Europe.

We're not stupid or indifferent, we just prefer to have our "bikes" immobile as can be seen in the myriad of health clubs.

but it's just so boring ...

... to 'ride' an exercise cycle. Even the ones used for spinning which feel like riding a fixed wheel bike get very tedious. 30 minutes is all I can manage without going bananas.

OTOH there is huge satisfaction in actually going somewhere under your own steam either walking or cycling (we walked 10 miles today in glorious countryside and were never more than 5 miles from our doorstep - a great pint of draft bitter at lunch time too in an old coaching inn). Reaching the top of a mountain pass in a car is a trivial exercise and the view is the same as that when I cycle up but it's a tenth as satisfying. Our best holidays ever, have been when we've cycled from home to an airport loaded with lightweight camping gear and spent two weeks exploring the Alps or the Pyrenees. Sadly old age and injury have forced us to resort to a camper van to carry our steeds to pastures new :)

One of the reasons I would never live in the USA is your road network. Even in New England where I thought there'd be lots of quiet lanes they just don't exist like they do in the UK or France, particularly. We did a 2 week tandem tour in Mass/NH in 1996. I suppose it's a characteristic of 'new' countries, because New Zealand (at least South Island) is similar. The lanes we use are often rights of way that have been in use since the Bronze Age even before the Roman roads we also ride. I think that's why mountain biking started in the USA - your quiet roads are generally trails.

I actually enjoyed my daily 30 commuting miles when I was working - even in the rain. How many people enjoy sitting in traffic jams in a car?

Anyway it's always sad to hear of any cyclist being killed (or anyone for that matter), famous or not, and my thoughts are with Robic's friends and family.
