Nanay began radiation treatments tonight. During the day she was seen by a great many nurses and doctors. Here's one conversation.

Neurosurgeon Nurse Practitioner- "Why are you here?"

Nanay- "Well, my daughter married an American."

I think everyone can figure out why that exchange is so funny. My wife certainly thought so.

Maybe it is USA humour ???

I don't understand what is so funny. Now - IF - she had said; "My parents knew each-other in the 'biblical' sense." I might have chuckled.

Re: Maybe it is USA humour ???

Maybe if the question was rephrased as "Why are you here in hospital", the humour might be more obvious?

Dave.

Hey Amrad,

Then the answer posted would just be weird and I still wouldn't get it. (But it could be that I'm just dense or have no sense of hunour, Let me think about that for a bit ...................... Ok, the sense of humour is a strong possibility but the density thing isn't. I'm soft and fluffy, probably a first cousin to a marshmallow.)

Explaining a joke

Rarely helps.

Light travels faster then sound... which is why most people appear brilliant (that is to say, brilliant in its meaning of "bright" or "intelligent") until you hear them (When one hears how dull -- in other words: non-brilliant -- they are).

Thanks Puddin' - I chuckled at your response

And yes I know I would have appeared much more intellegent if I had only sat back and allowed everyone to think I was smart enough to understand the humour. Actually asking the question about it let you all know that my IQ is in the single digits and you wouldn't even need all the fingers of one hand to calculate it.

Literalism

Puddintane's picture

Every situation is the result of the confluence of many decisions in life.

The nurse asked, specifically but unclearly, "Why are you here (in hospital)?"

The woman (who was evidently not born in the USA, but rather came here from halfway around the world) answered, generally, "Well, it's a long story... Have you got a few minutes?"

The joke depends upon exactly what here means, and is not at all dependent on taking place in the USA. One could tell the same story about an Australian woman in the UK whose daughter married a Brit.

The confusion is implicit in the words "married an American," because this phrase strongly implies that at one time neither she nor her daughter were Americans, so if she's in a US hospital, there's a long and complicated story behind it.

The nurse wanted only the most recent bits of the story, whilst the patient saw a much larger context.

Well it all began

with this police box on the corner, where there hadn't been one before, and someone running around shouting, "Forty Two!" Don't forget your towel.
