With enemies like these

Last year I was very proud when the city of Gainesville approved an ordinance that allows transgender persons to use the public restroom of the gender they identify with. Of course this measure was immediately and quite vehemently attacked, and a petition drive was launched to amend it, ostensibly to prevent men from entering a ladies room and then claim they were transgender if they got caught, despite the fact that the law already has a provision to deal with this. One of those in opposition to the law is the manager of a CVS pharmacy, who not only signed the petition but allowed his store to be used to distribute it, a man named Jonathan Matheny.

Well, last week Mr. Matheny was arrested and charged with one count of video voyeurism after a female customer of his business found a camera equipped cell phone in the stall of the ladies room -- cleverly disguised as a pile of tissue. She initially reported the discovery to the management -- Mr. Matheny -- and when he admitted that he had put the phone there, she went to the police. After his arrest he admitted that he has been doing this for months and has filmed at least 50 women. Police are currently investigating further to determine if he posted these pictures on the web, and are trying to identify and contact other victims. I expect Mr. Matheny will be facing additional charges in the near future.
