It is time to say goodbye to dad.

Hello my friends at BC

Well, it finally happened. My dad developed another block in the large intestine. However, it is not cancer but a 'brick' of bowel stuck to the wall of the intestine. He could have been operated on, but he decided not to. Because it would leave him in a weaker state. So he decided he fought it long enough. Besides the latest cancer treatment did not work. The CEA number bloomed to 600 or so.

It took a few more weeks for things to settle down. However, during that time, I found myself on the road at a job site last week. I have been calling almost everyday to know the status. I didn't call last Wednesday. I didn't have time. But I did call Thursday afternoon. I called my brother on his cell phone. Mom and my brother are watching. I was told he was in a coma on Wednesday. Then all of a sudden my dad breathed his last two breaths while I was on the phone. My mom's prayer is answered, we are all together when it happened. The funeral will be this Saturday, August 1.

Thank you for all of your prayers the last several months. We all agreed to tell one-liner jokes during the service. Plus, there will be a sign on the casket. "Do not disturb, gone fishing." I will be reciting a poem that my dad loves very much. It is "High Flight" by John Gillespie Magee, Jr. It is about a pilot flying in the skies and getting close to God for that brief moment. We know that my dad is in a far better place now.

Take care everyone. I have been stopping by once in awhile a reading some great stories lately. It will be a week or so before I log in again.

It is very strange how I feel about this. It seems God made sure he stuck around until I called Thursday for us to be together one more time. I am doing fine emotionally. I am taking it day by day. I will need to be sure to drive safely when I leave for the trip. It is a four hour drive for me.

My condolences

I know from your previous comments that this has been a long and hard road for your family. Now your father has reached the end of that road, and has gone on that last trip. It sounds as if you have already decided to celebrate his life, rather than mourn his passing, and that is good.

God bless you and your family, and may you feel some of the peace that is promised to us all. Take care, and drive safely.

Harvest time

erin's picture

About a year before he died, my father said to me, "Remember, you don't have to wait till the fields are brown to come and see us again." Meaning another harvest-time is always coming, but it isn't necessary to wait for a sign to know when to do something.

I made sure in that last year to come as often as I could. It meant a lot to him and it meant a lot to me.

I can feel the love you and your family share in your post. It's making me cry but that's okay, it's a good cry.

I'm sure you will always have your father with you because you stored up his wisdom and his love when you were together. Thank you for sharing a little of that with us.

Hugs,
Erin
