    • Marina Ogilvy (Mowatt)
Real person. Formerly married to Paul Mowatt. 37th in line for the throne of the United Kingdom, after her cousin, Flora Ogilvy. In the Mountbatten-Windsor royal line. Two children: Zenouska - born 1990, and Christian - born 1993. Divorced 1997. Scandals throughout young-adulthood that made the royal line uncomfortable at best. Reconciled with royal family.
Main character of the story, Joby, is a FICTIONAL addition to her family, as an illegitimate child born in 1998 in the U.S., would be inserted after the legitimate children in the royal line of succession, or 40th in line after HM Elizabeth II passes on to her final reward.
    • Zenouska Mowatt
Real person. Daughter of Marina Ogilvy (Mowatt). 39th in line for the throne of the United Kingdom, after her younger brother, Christian. (Personal Note: In my opinion, the only female member of the entire Royal Line guaranteed a place in the line of succession, as current policy allows female members to be "skipped" over -- which means as she is the only heir after the last of the Mountbatten-Windsors to be "lucky" enough to be male, she would have to inherit or the throne would be passed to the Earl of Harewood, HM Elizabeth II's cousin, and the Lascelles would hold the royal house. Since that can't be allowed, and something were to REALLY happen to the entire line, and they skipped some of the girls and not others, she would be the only female in the line that they could not AFFORD to skip over.) In the Mountbatten-Windsor royal line. Final link before the throne would pass to another house.

    • The Entire Royal Family of the United Kingdom

Er... actually, a disclaimer here. Yes, I'm using real names of the British Royals in part of this story -- please forgive as I have no knowledge whatsoever of their actual personalities or proclivities. They are merely part of the story to provide backdrop for this farcical journey into writing. The only resemblance to the real people is the name and general physical descriptions (and sometimes not even that) -- and as far as I know, neither Miss Marina Ogilvy (Mowatt) nor Miss Zenouska Mowatt nor any of the rest of the Royal family of the United Kingdom have passed away or are even in poor health.

Mountbatten-Windsors

erin's picture

The M-Ws are not the name of the current dynastic house. Elizabeth chose to keep the name Windsor for the dynasty rather than change it. And The Earl of Harewood is a Windsor, a descendant of George V. But yeah, he's not an M-W, a member of the Mountbatten-Windsor family. But then, neither are the descendants of Princess Margaret, they're Snowdon-Windsors.

But if he did inherit, he might change the name since he is not a direct descendant in a male line of G5. Well, he could change it if he were king, just because he was king, which is what old G5 did, not liking the old name of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha which he inherited from Edward VII.

But if the crown is going to pass to a female, Parliament can overrule the succession and choose a male relative instead. Doesn't even have to be closest male. It's Parliament that gets the last say in the matter, barring riots in the street. Still, with the monarchy now mostly ceremonial, they're unlikely to stick an oar in. Unless they decide to chuck the whole thing and become a republic.

Another interesting wrinkle is that the Commonwealth is no longer bound to simply accept whoever the UK picks as monarch. Each member could do something different and probably, if there were difficulties, some would choose to opt out.

Hugs,
Erin
