I've recently re-discovered one of the most powerful pieces of music I've ever heard. It made me cry and smile at the same time, and is without doubt, one of the most beautiful things I have ever experienced.

I prefer the original of Karl Jenkins piece with Miriam Stockley. However, its sub-title was, Songs of Sanctuary.
I think Karl Jenkins did four albums of Adiemus besides his 'Armed Man'.

I've always thought that...
Gordon Lightfoot's song The Wreck of the Edmund Fitgerald to be both haunting and emotional, doubly so, since it's a true story.
Beethoven's 7th inning stretch
I love this piece for pure emotion and haunting beauty. There are a dozen versions
of this movement on youtube, but I picked this one for its sound quality,
and for its languid pacing (it's about 90 seconds longer than usual):

If we're getting into the sublime
I prefer the Beethoven 9th which I've heard live with Rattle conducting the CBSO orchestra and Chorus. I had to walk around for an hour afterwards, I was as high as a kite and couldn't drive. It was brilliant and for me the ultimate piece of music.
However, I can weep buckets during the Mozart clarinet concerto or his Requiem and my heart can soar like a lark, with Vaughan-Williams, Lark Ascending or his variations on a theme by Tallis.
Then I go and spoil my patina of culture by turning up the CD player for Led Zep or Hendrix guitar riff in Voodo Chile. I suppose I enjoy lots of music across a wide range of taste, from raucous rock, fiddling folk, jangly jazz, bruising blues and piddling pop. I cannot however, stand (c)rap which leaves me cold.

This is a bit of a cheat and not everyone approves of transposing a lied intended for a male singer with piano accompaniment but Bizets orchestration of Schubert's Erlkonig is stunning and Anne Sophie von Otter's is riveting. I just wish I could get it on CD/DVD. Even if you don't like classical music, give this one a try; it really is exciting, I think.

I have two other Enya CD's. Orinoco Flow is great when I am on a sail boat. Now being tied up by some big hunk is about as close as I'll get to all the rope on a sail boat. :)

I got Karl Jenkins' Adiemus album (with Requiem and The Armed Man) from Amazon. And Miriam Stockley has one heck of a voice.
Having said that, I play Enya 'Paint the Sky with Diamonds' a lot.
