I Need Suggestions for Email Providers, to replace ones I can no longer access.

I lost several email addresses for various reasons. One reason was, they had possibles security breach, and to get back in they send you a link to an alternate email My problem was that the alternate one has the same problem, and they point to each other, so I can't recover them. Doh!

One problem I ran in to when trying to make new accounts is, several main providers now require a cell phone number to make an account. I manged to lockout several "email address names" trying to do this with out putting a number in.

Several places I log in to, Like here(BigCloset), now have email contact addresses for me that are dead.*

I need suggestions. What legit providers do Not require a Cell Number? . . or serious ID checking?

Of course they are already scanning all our communications for keywords.

* Did change the email address I have listed here, to one of my other ones that is still active.

I have one

I use mail.com
It's free and gives me cloud storage for free as well.

quidquid sum ego, et omnia mea semper; Ego me.

Another Freebie

is yandex.com

I have been using it for several years, now. A clean, quick, web based service.

To be different, you can go

To be different, you can go with mail.yandex.ru
Yandex is a biggest Internet company, mail provider and search engine for Russia. Yandex Mail has one of the best spam filters I had seen, lot of function and capabilities, you can use your cellphone number as additional security measure but it is not required.
Using same credentials you can access cloud storage, digital wallet and such.
(just be careful to avoid "yandex bar". And, for general paranoia I don't use yandex browser.)
Another question is whats wrong with Gmail?

What is wrong with GMail?

Well, where do I start eh?
firstly, it is Google.
secondly it is Google and despite what they say about scanning your emails, there is a lot of evidence out there that proves otherwise.
thirdly, it is Google who makes it clear that they want to know everything that they can about you in order to better send advertising to you.
fourthly, it is Google who will use whatever it takes to build up a picture of you even if you are deep in the closet with your family about the real you. Do you really want to risk them linking your two lives and suddenly you start to get adverts for say Breast Enhancements in your family email?

I don't use google for anything unless I really, really, really have to.
YMMV and probably will.

It is a bit too late...

About a year ago... Two weeks into my new job... On brand new corporate laptop that never left the office and that was not yet used for any non work related browsing... And I start receiving advertisements for exclusive lingerie and breast enhancement... So it is quite normal and has no relation to your activity. Sometimes it happens that someone from the same provider IP looks up something and then Ad providers start to push ads for the like products to anyone on the same IP in the hope that it could be office where there are many people with same interests. In couple more weeks lingerie ads had dropped drasticaly and were replaced with 4000A CBs and 0 gauge cables :-) But... As there were 30 females in the same office, I still received lingerie ads for the rest of the year...
More disturbing was when I registered account in one big "social network" using e-mail created for that sole purpose... And in the first ten in the list of "people you may know" there was a person that I knew in "off-line" world...

protonmail.com...

is an encrypted mail server based out of Switzerland. They don't require you handing over personal information to set up a mail account. I'm assuming you already have an ISP.

Gmail

Is far from being the only email provider that you can access on any device.
All Email suppliers offer POP or IMAP (different protocols) access. That means you can access it from any phone, tablet or Computer running one or more of the following Operating Systems. Windows, MacOS, Linux, FreeBSD, Unix.

Most email providers don't spy on you like Google.
If you don't mind then by all means use GMail. I won't use it even if I was paid a $1000/month. I value my privacy.
YMMV.
Samantha.

Roll your own

Seriously. That's what I have done, but then again I am an old IT hand and will attempt things that might put others off.

1 and 1 (Other providers are available.)

You might get a different home page depending what country you're in. There's a dropdown along the top for selecting a country. Despite the US domain above, the servers are in Germany, which may mean more or less oversight to US TLAs.

You can set up different email names and addresses depending on how you want to filter what you receive. I have nine or so, one of which is used solely for family, others for buying stuff online and yet more for coming here.

Ok, you'll have to pay but at the end it will be your email server and you won't have g??gle looking over your shoulder or the flakiness of other providers. Just remember to renew your domain name(s) every year...

Oh, right, that's automatic now. These people are good.

Penny

Hmm. I wonder if it would be worth Erin and co. setting up an email server for members to use? Or would that mean they have even more work to do?

Thanks Everyone! Suggestions Appreciated!

[ A General Reply to All ]:

I may use several of the options mentioned since part of the problem I had, was due to, alternate recovery email addresses being with the same provider.

Besides the obvious, Trans not really out, I am also an on gamer. And I like to keep Trans, official use, family & gamer contacts separate. I am also involved in "Second Life" (which I have posted here before) some people would get that just as little as they get Trans.

Multiple accounts on games which is generally allowed but not really encouraged also sometimes require separate emails, meaning I end up with extras just for that. lol

This Cell Number required thing is going to goof up the way a lot of people keep their online selves separate, not just for non-out Trans. Meanwhile it wont slow down the scammers. It is not about security, it is about tracking everything we do, and selling to us.
.

On a side note:
Several older people I know, have gotten their first computer, needing email and/or needing to fill out forms online. In some things the world does not do paper any more. Yet these people do not have a cell phone yet.

Thanks Again & Huggles to all,

recommendation

I recommend getting a domain name from godaddy or enom and then getting their basic email package deal... assuming you have a problem with google. godaddy's email is 2.99/mo, enom is 0.99/mo ... you get a little more from enom, spacewise too... though godaddy gets you Outlook. So it depends on whether you need a familiar email program or if you can use something you already have to access an IMAP or POP mail service.

Personally, I have a Google business account set up using my enom sourced domain name... which allows me to set up ten different users for my site/business. Obviously, all their mailing addresses go through the same domain (wisdomsprice.com) but I can set up several different usernames... and if one gets tied up with spam, I can close it and set up an alternate username. I still use GMail to access/read mail, though I don't have to. I spend more on the domain than the account with google. If you're looking to 'mask' your different accounts, using multiple domains is a good bet.

Choosing options like Yandex or other non-US mail providers is actually not a great way to go for a number of reasons... unless you're also spoofing your IP address to come from the same nation as your mail provider, you may find that you get denied registration from sites that do any data checking on registrations. Similarly, a lot of 'international' and 'private' mail services are being used by spammers for the same reason that you want to use them... and trying to register on a site with an email checker that checks spambot lists may flag you as a result of that domain.

About Yandex...

It allows registration to anybody with the cellphone or able to decipher captcha.
In first-last name fields you can put anything like "bebebe" and "blablabla". Or "a" "a".
Then you need to invent good password (remember xkcd on password strength? Don't use short meaningless gibberish, use a long phrase that you will remember.).
Then if you do not provide phone number, you have to enter unsecurity question and answer (same rule as with password - use long phrase you can remember _not_ related to the question you choose).
Aaannnddd!... You have e-mail that only (former) KGB will be able to read :-) But almost zero spam and had not seen any phishing emails in the last 10 years. And if you see an unwanted e-mail, it is a single click to ban that sender and type of letters forever. Very good option for senior people.

There is always the forgotten provider AOL.com

You can always try AOL.com. They are the forgotten provider but they are actually pretty good. They handle the email accounts for all current and former Verizon FIOS customers. They have two factor authentication (using a cell phone) but it is not required. They have spam filtering and you can use their client or just access via the web. They are good for older people with their first email account and they are free. You can also just forward your email to another account if you desire. I use that option so that everything ends up on my Office 365 Exchange server and I only have to check for email in one place. Office 365 and Outlook.com are also good options especially if you don't mind paying. The features on Office 365 all depend on how much you want to pay. I have the E5 option which gives me a cloud PBX, Skype for Business, and a 250 port conference bridge with dial in and dial out capability. Using Outlook.com you can get free email using one of their domains or pay a really small fee to use your own.

AOL!

AOL, now requires a cell number.
Both AOL And Yahoo, have just been acquired by Verizon.

So.. anyone want to bet against Verizon, eventually using messages from AOL & Yahoo, to advertise Verizon, if the cell number you have linked to your email is with another provider?

I have several emails

I got email addresses from every organization I have joined that offers them. I used these to get gmail addresses. This, my "primary" email address (it's not anymore) collects all the spam and website notification from places I actually want. My other addresses use different IP addresses courtesy of ATT through other devices. One gets all my youtube notices and Kim Komando daily notices. To date it has only gotten a few generic spams, nothing else and no crossover spam. I have 4 or 5 gmail addys, plus a handfull of primary addresses. No more hatemail, no annoying alumni emails looking for donations, no timeshares, none of that.

I learned my lesson some years back when I was getting harassed by a person who was also a BC member. Erin offered to weed out this person and ban them, but I said no. This person had proven they could get back on BC previously, and I figured they would just escalate the harassment. They were known as a very vengeful person and returned every imagined slight 10-fold or more. So I changed service providers then set up the layers in depth. All that, and ruthlessly blocking people on BC finally thwarted them.

I suppose having set up the gmail addys before they started wanting all that info gave me a break. They have asked, not demanded the info and I just click past them. I've done several other things also, but you'll excuse me if I don't reveal the details.

A lot of work, and you may not want to go through that. But it worked for me.

Oh, as far as anyone knows, I live at 123 Main St, and if necessary my number is 800-555-1234. I have yet to have anybody challenge that number. :-)
