Of all the satiric poems that point out the limitations of spell check software (and volunteer editors, for that matter), this one is the best I’ve seen. Sum tang two reed four yore con sit ration bee four righting Amy sing to pub lash.

The decline of spelling checkers

In the last few months, I have noticed that the spell checker on BCTS and Google have gotten incredibly stupid; even stupider than previously. My guess is that a broad dictionary data base simply takes too much memory and increases program cycle time too much.

No spellchecker in BC software

We don't have the spellchecker in Drupal (BCTS) turned on, so any spellchecking being done on input here is in your browser, most likely. We don't turn on the spellchecker because then it would be on for everyone and it slows some things down.

Hugs,
Erin

Even the best spelling checkers

can’t catch those annoying homophone errors that bring the reader’s (or at least my) imagination to a screeching halt by focusing attention back on the text...which is the point of the barely (bear Lee?) readable poem above. Of course, that’s because spell checkers are not designed to catch those kinds of errors, although some people seem to think they are.

The only way I can rate the quality of a spell checker is by how good it is at detecting what I meant to type, and including it in the list of suggested corrections. Otherwise, I use apps on my PC that do spell checking (like the Firefox web browser, which checks what the user types into dialog boxes) and add words to the local database when necessary.

To catch other mistakes, I read through my stuff at least once before posting it. It’s sort-of like that last good look in the mirror to make sure everything is in place before stepping out...........

By the way, while I’m at it, it was this comment that inspired me to post about spell checkers.
