I ran across this article today while web surfing. In short it is about a Chinese girl Xu Jiao playing the part of a boy in a Stephen Chow film called CJ7. I can't help but wonder if there would've been more attention if it had been a boy playing a girl's part. After all what's the difference? :)

Long Tradition

Girls have been playing boy's parts in theatre and movies for sometime. Peter Pan for one. Bart Simpson (voiced by a woman) in the Simpsons for another. Even the golden child in Eddie Murphy's Golden Child movie was played by a Chinese girl.

Even Longer Tradition

Of men playing women's parts, dating back CENTURIES -- and yet that gets focused on.

At some stages of development...

... it is safer for the business part of the movie industry
slightly smaller chance of growth "spurt" during the months of filming.
No chance of voice "breaking" during the months of filming.
picking a well below average height girl allows for an older actress than a average height boy would be, with the likely acting and physical movement (from dance classes and such)differences that are available to older kids (what, Gary Coleman was originally playing a kid a half dozen years younger than his actual age)

This is really going in Hong Kong right now. The fact that a girl plays the boy's part is not even an issue (which I think is great). It's a good movie too,
Joanne

Good point!

The theater and the entertainment industry has long been a refuge for those who are different. I guess nothing has changed. As the the movie well I'll looking forward to seeing it too. It sounds like a cool flick!
