Updates on Stuff and Things

Printer-friendly version

Hey Everyone!

I just wanted to update on a few things.

There are several things going on at once. One is that we are being spidered by several sources and they seem to spin up bots just as fast as we can have them blocked.

Another is that we think someone is intentionally trying to keep us offline, and anyone that knows me knows I won't say that lightly.

So we have done several things to try and keep things up and stable.

One of them might bring back the outdated/stale form error. I am working hard to find a patch from this issue which stems with the fact that we are using a multi-headed configuration (more than one webserver). As soon as I figure it out I will let you all know.

Please feel free to use this thread to leave complaints or suggestions. We are working hard on this, and I'm sorry I took a couple days off. I'm still here, Amy's in the livingroom with me watching TV trying to get an appointment with an orthopedist. I will update you all on Amy's health as we progress also.

Piper,
I wish you success in tracking down and killing the spiders.
I know it is redundant to remind a programmer to check for infections. There is a virus out there virtually undetectable doesn't reside on the HD. Everyone is pointing at it escaping from NSA.
Anyway, check for the latest and greatest viruses

I always looked at each day and wondered if I was so important if the future would change if I died today? And the answer is no matter what I think of myself and how important I think I might be. The answer is no. Someone else would be there doing my job the next day and the world wouldn't change. Life goes on.

Take care of loved ones because when the SHTF and all the "friends" have disappeared because I'm no longer useful to them? The ones we share our love with will be the only ones left to hold us as the wolves try to tear us apart. I don't know about you but I found I couldn't fix all the troubles in this world. I know..., shocker huh!

A Disturbance in the Force

In the last few weeks I have noticed that several of the sites I visit are performing differently than I am used to. CNN seems to be having lots of issues, and CBC is too. My computer knowledge is subjective, though I used to be pretty hot with DOS.

Thank all of you for your hard work.

Outdated/stale form issue

WillowD's picture

I have discovered that when I get the outdated/stale form issue I can simply click submit again. This workaround almost always works in the first 10 tries.

FYI Piper, barring about 20 minutes around 10pm EDST (and possibly early in the morning when I was still trying to wake up), the server was working perfectly all day yesterday. And response times were unusually fast.

Poroblems

Managed to sneak in a purchase on Amazon UK via the link on this website between crashes, You're all doing a great job, keep it up and good luck. Stamp on the spiders.

I concur with earlier comments

Also, if the outdated/stale form error comes back there is a work-around as already mentioned (perseverance). In that case this might be posted in another way than in blog/forum comments. I suspect that a number of the people here don't read all of them.

Thank you for all your work!

Taking care of Amy comes first.

The site, while important, comes in at a distant third behind Ninja Baby. Thanks for all you and all the others do to help keep the site running. My very best for a speedy recovery for Amy.

Spidering or something else?

With the proliferation of sites republishing copyrighted material, could they be after BC's IP? Just a thought

Server errors on Hatbox

WillowD's picture

On the BCTS side response times have been very good for the past week and I've only had one failure to post a comment. (I like your new message that says to wait three seconds and try again.) However, I finally got around to renewing my premium membership today that expired a few weeks ago and experienced a number of server problems on the HatBox.

1) While exploring the three levels of premium membership options I frequently encountered errors while switching between the three types.
2) After I told PayPal to pay you it returned to your web site, which said the payment failed. (I redid everything and it worked the second time. Paypal only has a record of one transaction. So that part worked out.)
3) I decided to download Angela Rasch's "The Girl Who Saved Aunt T's". I failed about 6 times to bring up the page. I was able to bring up pages for other books with no problems. I eventually got the book. (Some day I plan to get around to getting all of Angela Rasch's stories. They are awesome.)
4) There were a few other problems on the HatBox side but I don't remember the details.

I find it rather odd that the HatBox side was so flaky when the BCTS side was very stable. I hope you manage to figure out what the problems are. We certainly don't want people giving up in frustration when they are trying to pay you or donate to you.

And thank you once again for all of the time and effort you've been pouring into the system.

Should be fixed.

Mostly. There's some kind of synch problem we are still having that causes minor problems unrelated to the ones you describe above.

rHello:

I was looking for a way to report this to Erin when I saw this entry.

Earlier today, around 10:00 am PDT, I was on this site (BCTS) and saw something I've not seen before. In a little window in the middle of the main BCTS screen, I saw: "old version of GOTOASSIST being uninstalled". In a few seconds I saw: " new version of : GOTOASSIST being installed". All this took perhaps 30 seconds total.

As I understand it, this is a program that allows remote access to one's computer, and I think I have to manually allow access to my computer. I am not suggesting that BCTS is doing anything nefarious, and do not know where the window came from. It could be my IP, microsoft, or HP, or one of Trump's minions for all I know.

My computer appears to be working normally. A week or so ago, I was trying to update my Garmin GPS when I accidentally (stupidly too) allowed someone I thought was from Garmin to have access to my computer for about 5 minutes to "fix" Garmin's access to my GPS. I got suspicious and when I looked at my address window saw that Garmin was not in it, and then he asked for $300. I immediately UNPLUGGED the computer and let it set for around 10 minutes. When I rebooted, the individual appeared to be gone.

At the instruction of an individual that works for the State of Oregon, I run no antivirus save for Malwarebytes, and I try to keep Windows defender "ON".

I don't expect BCTS to help me in any way. I was merely trying to be helpful in reporting this.

Thanks
