Help! My girlfriend is a Unicorn!
Help! My girlfriend is a Unicorn!
chapter 1
If I had just listened to my girlfriend that day, everything would be different.
But I’m getting ahead of myself, and I should start at the beginning.
Things really started when Melody and her mother moved into the house next door.
They were kinda shy at first, but they warmed to my family, especially me for some reason.
Most of the houses on our block were owned by older people whose kids had grown, so Melody and I became playmates, if only for the lack of other choices.
I am not gonna complain, but a lot of the time we ended up playing girly games, because Melody would talk me into it with one use of her puppy dog eyes.
Years past, and although we hadn’t done anything more than hug each other, I felt like we were as much a couple as any two elementary kids could be.
One day, as Melody’s thirteenth birthday was approaching, her mom told me that in their family a girl’s thirteenth birthday is only celebrated by family, so she wanted me to not come.
I was hurt by that, and I think she realized that, so she set up a unofficial party that would be held for Melody and I the week before her birthday, and it would be just for the two of us, as her mother would be working that day. My mom would be home if we had any trouble, and Melody wanted to hold our party in the park across the street, but still it felt nice to be trusted enough to be alone together for a couple of hours.
Unfortunately, that was the day everything went to heck.
It started wonderfully, we had a nice picnic and shared a small birthday cake. I gave her a pretty necklace as a gift, and we shared our first kiss.
I was packing up the leftovers of our picnic when Melody suddenly began to shake.
“Oh ... this is happening too soon!” She wailed.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
“Can you ... can you get me home?” She managed between grunts of pain.
“Shouldn’t I take you to my house? My mom can take you to a hospital.”
“No ... please trust me. I just need to get home.”
I trusted her, so I helped her get to her house.
Once we got there, I helped her to lay down on the couch, and she asked me to call her mother for her.
I went to the phone, which had Melody’s mom’s work number programed in, so i called. When she answered, I told her what had happened, and Melody’s mom told me that she would get home as quickly as possible, and then hung up.
I went back to check on Melody, and told her her mother was on the way, but I would stay until she came.
“I ... I don’t think that’s a good idea, Alan. You ... should go.”
She sounded so serious I almost turned to go when she screamed in pain, and I rushed back in and took her hand.
“Sorry, Melody, you can’t get rid of me that easily. I’m staying.” I said, hoping to make her smile.
Instead, she screamed again, and the world went white ...
When I was able to see again, I was stunned by what I saw. Instead of a girl, in front of me was a unicorn.
An honest-to-God unicorn.
And somehow, I knew that the unicorn was Melody.
I didn’t know anything about unicorns, but I did know a few things about horses as my grandparents had a small farm and I had helped look after the animals there, and looking at Melody, it seemed to me like she was exhausted from her transformation.
I wasn’t sure what I could do, or even what to think, but fortunately, a minute later Melody’s mom came in the door.
She did something complicated with her hands, and Melody’s trashed bedroom was transformed into a stable, with a big pile of hay on the floor where the bed used to be.
Melody’s mom said, “Dear, you need to rest. Lay down, and later I’ll bring you some warm oats to help you regain your strength.”
Then she turned to me, and said, “Well, i think you and I need to talk. Come to the kitchen, please.”
She walked toward the kitchen, and I stumbled after her in shock.
After I sat down, I said, “Mrs. Greenfields, I didn’t imagine what I saw, did I? Melody really became a unicorn?”
“Yes, dear. She did.”
“Is she ... is she gonna be okay?”
Melody’s mother put her hand over mine, and said, “Alan, that question shows exactly why Melody likes you. And why I like you too, although not quite the same way. Yes, she will be okay. She needs to sleep for a while, then build up her strength, but sometime tomorrow she should be feeling much better.”
“Good. Now, how is this possible?” I asked.
Melody’s mother sighed, and said, “Well, you see, a long time ago, a unicorn fell in love with a human male. She loved him so much, she went to one of the most powerful witches who ever lived, and asked to be made human. She got her request, married, and had a daughter. But when her daughter turned thirteen, she turned into a unicorn. The mother went to the witch, and the witch told her that once her daughter regained her strength, she would be able to turn back into a human. And the daughter did, and married a man, and had a daughter, and the same thing happened again. And so it has been, for generations upon generations.”
“So Melody will be able to turn back into a girl?”
“Once she’s strong enough, yes.”
“I’m assuming you guys didn’t want me to know all this? That’s why I wasn’t going to be invited to Melody’s birthday?”
“Yes, dear. Please don’t think it was because we didn’t trust you. It’s just there are some very bad people, who if they thought you might even know a tiny amount about unicorns, would not hesitate to kidnap you, or your mother and use terrible torture until they learned all you knew. Frankly, we hoped to spare you that risk.”
“So what happens now?”
“I am not sure, hon. You see, it’s not just that you know our family secret. When Melody transformed, you were far too close to her. You were bathed in magic, magic that is now a part of you, in every cell of your body. To anyone with magical senses, you are a blinding neon sign saying magic is present. And I don’t know how that will affect you. No regular human has ever had as much magic in their system. So we need to figure out how to protect you and your family, and prepare for that magic to be activated.”
I sat there, trying to wrap my head around all this stuff, and then Melody’s mother continued, “Go home, and get some rest. Tomorrow night, bring your mother over, and I’ll tell her everything that happened. I am going to try and contact my own mother, to figure out the best plan for dealing with the magic inside you, and how best to protect your family from harm.”
Then she stood up, came over to me, and gave me a hug.
“I won’t say ‘don’t worry’ because you’re probably going to worry anyway. But try and remember you wont ever be alone in this. I will be there for you, and once Melody recovers, so will she.”
I thanked her, and walked home, with my head spinning. I told my mom about being invited over to Melody’s place the next night, and she agreed to go.
With that taken care of, I went to my room, got ready for bed, and was soon fast asleep.
The next day, things only got stranger ...

Chapter 2
When I woke up the next morning, I could feel the first effects of all the magic in my system. I was overflowing with energy, and had real trouble staying still. Since it was spring break and I didn’t have school, I went over to a nearby park and ran around, doing gymnastics I had never tried before, but no matter how hard I pushed myself, I couldn’t seem to feel any less energetic.
Finally, I went home and tried to calm down. It took me a while, but eventually I was able to gain control of myself enough that I could relax a little before my mom was to come home from work.
When my mom came home, I persuaded her to go over right away, as I felt like something was building up inside of me, and I would need help before I exploded.
When we got to Melody’s house, we found they had another visitor as well, an older lady who was introduced as Melody’s grandmother, Willow.
The older woman looked at me, and frowned.
“It’s pretty bad, Daisy.”
“Like how bad?” asked Melody’s mother.
“Like he could die very soon bad.”
“What’s going on?” My mom asked.
Melody’s mother explained about unicorns, and even flash-transformed into one and back to convince my mom she was telling the truth.
“So what about my son?” My mom asked.
“Every species has a limit on how much mana - the energy of magic - they can hold. Your son is currently holding far more than a human being can normally. If we don’t do something very soon, he could very easily die.” Melody’s grandmother said.
“Can you do anything?” My mom pleaded.
“There is one idea I had. The very same spell that allowed us unicorns to take on human shape, but done in reverse. We would turn your son into a unicorn.” Melody’s mom stated.
My mom thought about it for a moment, and then said, “Do it.”
“All right. Now, Mrs. Douglas, you’ll have to leave Alan with us. We don’t want you getting bathed in magic as well.”
I thought for sure my mother would refuse, but she looked at Melody’s mom and grandmother, and said, “All right. Please call me when I can return.”
Then she hugged me, and said, “Whatever happens, Alan. Remember I love you.”
And then she left.
I am not going to describe the ritual Melody’s grandmother used. All I am going to say is at some point I more or less passed out, and when I woke up ....
I was a unicorn.
The next twenty-four hours or so were filled with me coping with my condition. At first, I was weak as any newborn foal, and spent a lot of time resting on a bed of hay or eating warmed oats provided to me by Melody’s mom. But as I got physically stronger, I had to spend more time learning about being a unicorn - how to run on four legs, how to absorb manna through my horn into my body to replace what I had lost in the transformation, and other stuff besides.
Fortunately, Melody had recovered enough to help me through the worst of it, and by the next day Melody’s grandmother said I was ready to try and transform back into a human shape.
I tried the transformation, and I could feel myself going back into human form, but when it was complete I realized something was wrong.
I had become a girl.
“Ohhh ... boy.” I said, looking down at my new body.

Chapter 3
I was really glad that Melody was there at that moment. She recovered from the shock before I did, and swept me up into a hug to prevent me from totally freaking out.
Eventually, I stopped shaking, and she said, “You ... need some clothes.”
Oh yeah. I was naked.
A half-hour later, I was dressed in pants and a t-shirt borrowed from Melody, and eating some soup while waiting for my mom to get back.
Taking a look at myself dressed like that, I looked pretty close to the old me only obviously a girl. My hair was longer, my face somewhat softer, but I could still see the resemblance, like I had become a sister to my former self.
Once she arrived, Melody’s mom explained that unicorns normally have ten females for every male, but they didn’t expect that to apply to me since I had been a boy.
Then my mom came over and hugged me, and said to me, “Boy or girl, you’re still my child.”
I cried a little, and held her tight.
“So what do we do now? How do I go back to school as a girl and not draw attention to the fact I was a boy before? And I don’t know anything about being a girl, much less a unicorn, and ...”
Melody hugged me from one side as my mom hugged me from the other.
Melody’s mom said, “Well, spring break isnt over yet. I think we can get you situated in terms of the school by the time you’d be going back.”
“Magic?” I asked.
“No. Computers.” She said, grinning.
“And being a girl isn’t that tough. I manage it.” Melody said, and gave me another hug.
I snuggled with both of them, and sighed, “Okay. what’s first?”
“A new name” Melody said, “Not too many girls named ‘Alan’ after all.”
“You could go by Alana” Melody’s mom suggested.
“No, her name will be Bonnie.” My mother insisted.
“Why Bonnie?” I asked.
“Well, Alan means ‘handsome” and Bonnie means ‘pretty’ - and as you are my child, I get to name you.” My mom said.
“Fine.” I sighed.
“Now for some ‘girl training’!” Melody said with a giggle.
I’d love to say I found my “girl training” awful, that I was so manly I sucked at trying to act feminine, but the truth is it wasn’t all that bad, even though I was still lacking in confidence by the time spring break was over.
Not that there weren’t embarrassing moments. Like learning about bras got me blushing, and the less said about learning about periods the better.
When I wasn’t learning girl stuff, Melody’s mom taught me unicorn history, and boy, it turned out there was a lot of stuff that had happened that ordinary people weren’t aware of. Apparently, a couple of million years ago, the Earth passed through a region of space that had been saturated with chaos magic somehow. The magic caused all kinds of weird stuff to happen, including the creation of a lot of magical races i used to think as just being in stories. But for the last three thousand years, the Earth has been slowly pulling out of that region, and magic has become much rarer. Many of the magical races have died out, or gone totally into hiding trying to preserve whatever magic they could.
There was one really worrying group. The Magi. Magi - witches, warlocks, call them what you will, looked like people but had much more ability to store and use magic. Some were good, like the witch who had helped Melody’s ancestor turn into a human, but most were selfish, arrogant, and power-hungry.
Fortunately, the diminishment of magic has meant they have had to spend most of their time just maintaining the power they had, but they still influenced regular people, and caused trouble indirectly through their human operatives.
Finally, Spring Break was over, and I was set to return to school, this time as a girl. Melody told me that as a unicorn, I would produce a kinda passive “don’t notice anything odd about me” field that would keep most of the students and teachers from connecting the new me to the old me, and the changes in my official records would help as well, but I still was kinda nervous. Despite all I had learned about being a girl, I still really didn’t think of myself as one yet. It was more like I felt like I was wearing a girl costume - a really good costume, one that would fool most people, but still I saw most of the changes as external, and it really hadn’t sunk in that the changes were more than skin deep.
That, was soon to change ...

Chapter 4
I got through the first day back without any major difficulties. The people who would have said “hey” as I walked by before said “hey” as I walked by. Teachers hesitated for a second on my name like they were expecting a different name in that spot, but quickly that passed as well, and it seemed like as far as anybody at school was concerned I had always been a girl.
That said, I was glad I didn’t have gym this semester, as I was not ready to share a shower with a bunch of naked girls.
Finally, the last class of the day was done, and Melody and I walked home.
But before we got all the way to my house, Melody stopped, and said, “I think someone’s following us.”
“What should we do?” I asked.
In response, Melody grabbed my arm, and said something i didn’t understand. Next thing I knew, we were in her backyard.
“What the heck?” I gasped.
“Just a little magic. We’ll teach you how, promise.”
“So what do we do about whoever was following us? I’m assuming we cant just teleport every time.”
“I’ll ask my mom. But I think we’re gonna have to accelerate your magic training, just in case something comes up. In the meantime, if you see, hear or even feel something that’s not right, call me or come to me.”
“Okay. Well, I better go home, Mom’s sure to be wondering how my first day went.” I said.
Melody gave me a hug, and said, “Okay. Talk to you later.”
I quickly made my way home, a hundred questions running through my mind.
“Who would follow us? Was our cover as unicorns blown already? What could we do if it was?” I muttered to myself.
Once I got home, however, I tried to put it out of my mind and focus on my schoolwork. I had missed a couple of tests while I was ... indisposed, so I would have to make them up this week before I could really focus on the new stuff we were learning.
I had finished my homework and had supper when the phone rang.
I answered, and it was Melody.
“Good news!” She gushed.
“What?” I asked.
“Mom figured out who was following us. It was a sprite.”
“A ... sprite?”
“Kinda like a pixie or a fairy. Not dangerous, but sometimes curious. Probably felt the magic that changed you, and was investigating.”
“That’s good news, right?”
“Yep. Still, Mom’s gonna see what we can do to protect you and your mom from any prying eyes.”
“That means your mom is gonna have to spend magical energy, doesn’t it. I feel bad about how much manna I’m costing you guys.”
“We think you’re worth it.”
The next day before school Melody came over. I asked about the sprite, and Melody assured me it probably would move on quickly if it couldn’t track us.
“They are very curious, but they don’t have a lot of patience.” She said.
“Too bad, it might be fun to meet a sprite.” I said.
“Probably not. They are known for pulling some nasty pranks on occasion.”
“Another childhood love spoiled.” I said with a smile.
My lovely girlfriend grinned at me, and said, “So how was your first day in public as a girl?”
“Not bad, I guess, other than the whole being stalked by a magical creature thing.”
Melody pulled out three charms, and held them up for me.
“Yes, well these charms will help in that regard. This first one I want you to carry with you. It will fog your magical signature, making you almost impossible to track by magic. The second one is for your house. Once I place it over your fireplace, it will prevent any hostile magic user from being able to enter as well as protect the house from any magic attacks from outside. The last one is for your mom. It will protect her from any magic cast on her with hostile intent.”
“Thank you so much!” I exclaimed, and hugged her.
“You’re very welcome.” Melody said.
We hugged again.
“You ready for your second day at school as a girl?” Melody asked.
“Sure. The first day went well, being stalked by a sprite aside.”
“Good, but I should mention something. You may not have noticed, but there a few guys who were regarding you as ... possible dating material.”
“Say what!”To be continued ...

Chapter 5
“Sorry hon. You’re an attractive girl. You’re gonna get some attention from boys.”
“Well, I guess they can look but no touching.” I said.
“You say that now ...” she said with a smile.
“Wha... what do you mean?” I asked nervously.
“I’m sorry to tell you, hon, but most unicorns are straight.”
“So? ... Oh. You mean I might start liking boys?” I said in shock.
“I don’t know for sure. You might end up ... flexible.”
A scary thought occurred to me. “Does that mean you ... dont want me anymore?”
“To be honest, I was scared that would happen, when I realized you were now a girl. But yesterday, at school, I ... still knew I wanted you close to me. Since then, I’ve been kinda worried I’d lose you to a boy.”
“I really hope not.” I said, sadly.
“Well, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.” She said.
“Okay.” I said, and we hugged again.
We went to school, and it might have been a normal day if I could have relaxed, but I kept worrying about the possibility of liking guys, which left me distracted all day long.
Finally, the day was over, and Melody said, “I want you to come over to my house. My mom made a little place where I can get a little unicorn time in, and I think you need some too.”
We went over to Melody’s house, and inside was a set of stairs leading to a doorway. Melody led me down, opened the door ...
And beyond the door was a green field.
“How ..” I started to ask.
“Magic, of course!” Melody replied, giggling. “Now turn into a unicorn, and let’s have some fun!”
I did, and we did.
We ran, we jumped, we ate sweet hay (human me wouldn’t have found it sweet, but unicorn me sure did), we laughed, and we nuzzled each other (keep your mind out of the gutter, it was very innocent).
And I became much less worried about boys, because no boy, even if I did end up finding one handsome, would ever be the equal to my unicorn girlfriend.
Of course, eventually, we would have to return to the real world, and continue to face the challenges of being girls in junior high as well as magical beings, but that, as the saying goes, is another story ...
The End.

Just kidding! More coming!
Help! My girlfriend is a Unicorn!
Chapter 6
I shyly came out of my room in a dress, and my mother dabbed her eyes as she looked at me.
“Mom?” I asked, “Are you ... crying?”
“Well, it's just ... you look beautiful.”
“Well, I guess that’s good, right?”
“Sure, but you’re going into highschool next year, and then maybe college, and .. well, dont grow up too fast, okay?”
“I just want to get through today. Dont worry mom I’m in no hurry.”
We hugged.
So why was I in a dress?
It was Melody’s fault, of course.
Her home ec class was doing a bake sale/fundraiser and her teacher asked the students to wear something formal to help attract customers. And using the dreaded puppy-dog eyes, Melody had convinced me she shouldnt be the only one going to school in a dress, even though I wasn’t even in her class.
You’d think that since I was also a girl, the puppy-dog eyes wouldn’t work on me anymore, but you’d be wrong.
So there I was, trying my best to remember nobody was going to think I was a boy in drag.
And also trying to ignore the fact I ... kinda liked how I looked in this outfit. A little.
Fortunately, before I followed that particular train of thought down the rabbit hole, Melody arrived.
“Wowzers!” I said, “Mel, you look fantastic!”
Looking at her, I realized what my mom meant by growing up too fast. The dress made Melody seem at least a couple years older than she actually was, to the point I could easily see her getting hit on by high school boys.
She smiled at me, and said, “I could say the same about you.”
“Yeah, well, let’s get the day started.” I mock-grumbled.
Despite my fears, the first part of the day wasn’t horrible. Apparently, Melody’s class wasn’t the only one dressing up for the bake sale, so we didn’t stand out as much as I had feared.
As each period passed, the bake sale tables started to look more and more ready for the lunch crowd, and finally, everything was ready.
I actually had fun helping sell the cakes and cookies the girls had made, but just before lunch, the screaming started ...
I opened the door to the cafeteria, and saw that a food fight had started.
But not your normal food fight.
In this food fight, the food was doing the fighting ...
Honest. There were several piles of food that had taken on humanoid shape and were literally throwing bits of themselves at each other.
The only good thing about this crazy situation that I could see was the food fighters were focused on each other, not on the students, who were trying to get out of the way as quickly as possible.
I felt a hand pull me back.
“Mel?” I asked.
“I got a hold of my mom, she said stay clear.” Melody said.
“”You used magic?” I asked.
“No, silly. My cell phone.”
“What’s going on in there? Does she know?”
“I was able to get a picture of what’s going on, and mom said it shows who is responsible.”
Melody handed me her phone, and showed me a picture of the cafeteria. I had been so focused on the food creatures I hadn’t noticed, but in the picture you could see a boy, who looked like he was our age but dressed like a little kid going to some private school - suit jacket, tie, shirt, but very short pants - laughing at the mayhem.
“He’s a magi, mom said. If he sees us, things could go bad.”
“But kids are going to get hurt in there!” I hissed.
“No. Mom said she has called for some help.”
“The police? What could they do?”
“Not the police, but mom said we’ll see.”
And indeed we did. A moment later, there was a flash of lightning, and suddenly there was a young woman dressed in a short tunic and carrying a bow with a quiver of arrows on her back.
I wouldn’t call what happened next a ‘fight”, exactly, as it was almost immediately clear the young man was out of his league, and very quickly it was over and he had disappeared. Then the young woman said something I couldn’t understand, and the cafeteria was restored to normal, with all the students sitting at their tables as if nothing had happened.
After school was over, I went over with Melody to her house, and asked her mom about what had happened.
“Based on the photo Melody sent me, I recognized the young man as Klarion, who is of the magi - a witch, to be precise.”
“I thought witches were women?” I asked.
“No. Witch, Warlock and Wizard are all different divisions of the Magi, and someone of either sex can be any of the three.”
“So who was it who stopped him?” I asked.
“Artemis.”
“Like the Greek goddess? Really?” I asked, stunned.
Melody’s mom nodded. “My mother did her some favors many decades ago, and she has a certain dislike for magical chaos in any case, so I hoped she would come if i called her, and she did.”
“Was this boy looking for us?” I asked.
“Not likely, and in any case he was obviously more interested in causing trouble than hunting unicorns. But I still want both you and Melody to be on your guard. Okay?”
“Okay, Mrs. Greenfields.”
And on that down note, I left to go home ...

Help! My girlfriend is a Unicorn!
Chapter 7
Despite the fact no one at school remembered the “food fight”, I discovered that there were some changes in people the next day. Boys especially, were looking at me differently, but even some of the girls seemed to be more aware of my existence than before, even though I had returned to a more “tomboy” look.
But the biggest change was internal. Once I had relaxed, there had been something freeing in being “pretty”, although it was somewhat frightening as well. I found myself hoping there would be other opportunities to do something like that again.
What would have been forbidden or at least severely frowned upon when I was a boy was now not only allowed, but celebrated. I could be “girly” if I wanted to be - after all I was now a girl.
And I admitted to myself that I wanted to be - at least some of the time, although I still wanted to be practical in my clothing choices.
And after a couple of boys had approached me, I could also admit that the big reason why I turned them down had to do with already having someone in Melody rather than a lack of physical attraction to boys - or at least some boys.
And I could live with that.
Then, in my last class, something weird happened.
It was social studies, and we had a guest speaker who came to talk about some Native Canadian myths and stories.
He was introduced as Dr. Michael Twoyoungman, and the story he shared almost seemed like something out of Lovecraft rather than something believed by native Canadians - a story about terrible monsters who once roamed the land, who had been exiled thousands of years ago, but were always trying to find a way back to the world of Men.
The lecture itself was fine, but our teacher asked Melody and I to stay after class, and then, to my total surprise, left the room, leaving us alone with our guest lecturer.
“I wish there was time for politeness, but unfortunately, there is not. I know what you two are. But please believe I mean you no harm. I need to speak to your families, as soon as possible” He said quickly.
“Well I can ask my mom if she wants to speak to you,” Melody replied.
He pulled out a card with a phone number on it, and then said, “Here. give this to her, and please, its very important.”
Melody took the card, and said, “Something says you’re telling us the truth. I’ll give this to my mother tonight. Beyond that, though it’s her decision.”
He nodded, and left the classroom.
“What do you think that’s about?” I asked.
“Maybe Mom will know,” Melody responded.
We went to Melody’s house, and gave her mom the card, telling her about this Twoyoungman guy. Meldoy’s mom said she’d look him up - didnt say how, I figured it was some magical version of Google. Then she said that Melody and I should try not to worry about things, that she would handle it from here.
“But cant we help, Mom?” Melody asked.
“No dear. You both have other things to focus on,” Her mom said.
“Like what?” I asked.
“Like getting comfortable with you are now, Bonnie. And Melody, your priority should be helping her.”
We both sighed, and then Melody walked me home. On the way, she said, “Adults never want kids to have fun.”
I shook my head, and said, “Fun like what that witch kid was doing? No thanks. Besides, we’re unicorns. I suspect ‘boring’ isnt gonna be how you describe our lives.”
“Probably not,” Mel admitted with a smile, and we hugged.
And you know what? I was right ...

Chapter 8
For Ray Drouillard, who suggested the were-kitties.
As it happened, the next couple of days made me wonder about how exciting things were gonna be for me. All I had to deal with was being a girl in junior high, which probably was “excitement” enough, considering.
Then on Friday, Melody told me her family was going to be hosting a “guest” over the weekend, and I was invited to come over on Saturday.
So Saturday morning, I went over, and was greeted at the door by Melody’s mom, who told me, “Melody is changing. Did she forget to mention you would need a swimsuit today?”
“A swim ... no, she neglected to mention that little detail,” I growled.
“Well, dont worry. She has some spare ones, one should fit you well enough.”
Just then, I heard Melody’s voice saying “Did I hear the door?”
I looked up and saw Melody was wearing a pretty yellow one-piece swimsuit.
Any doubts I had that I would no longer find her attractive faded looking at her in that suit.
It must have showed, as Melody’s mom said, “Close your mouth, dear, you’ll catch flies.”
I blushed, and said, “Sorry.”
Melody’s mom called up to her, saying, “Melody, dear, did you forget to tell Bonnie to bring a swimsuit?”
“Bonnie doesn’t HAVE a swimsuit. Not one that er ... covers enough ground, so to speak.”
“Oh. Yes, I had almost forgot Bonnie had been a boy,” Melody’s mom said.
I glared at her for that, but she didn’t notice.
Then Melody tossed something down to me, and I realized it was a twin to the swimsuit she was wearing, except in pale pink.
“I ... I cant wear this!” I said, looking at the skimpy amount of fabric in my hands.
“You’ll be fine, dear. And it’s just me, Melody, and our guest here. “
Trying to delay the inevitable, I asked, “Just who is this guest, anyway?”
“You’ll see,” Melody’s mom said, “Now put on the suit, go out to the back, and have fun!”
I looked dubiously at the swimsuit, and muttered, “Fun, she says. In this thing?”
But I gathered my courage, and went and got changed.
I was a little afraid to look at myself once I had the swimsuit on. But finally, I stepped out of the bathroom, to find Melody waiting for me.
“Holy cats, Bonnie!” She exclaimed. “You’re ... gorgeous!”
I turned several shades of red, and said, “Dont you have a guest waiting for us?”
“Oh, right. Come on!” She laughed, and pulled me by the hand to the back yard, where there was now a swimming pool.
I could hear splashing from the pool, but from my angle I couldnt see who was doing the splashing, until Melody called out, “Ari, come on up! I want you to meet my girlfriend Bonnie!”
There was a huge splash, and then I saw a girl pull herself up to the edge of the pool. She had red hair, and was wearing a bathing suit that had pretend clam shells painted on the top part.
Melody climbed a ladder, and then jumped into the water with a shriek.
I sighed, and climbed the ladder ...
And stopped, because I realized that this girl “Ari” was no normal girl. Instead of feet she had a tail.
“You’re a mermaid?” I asked, shocked.
“Yeah, and you’re a unicorn disguised as a girl. Now come on, the water’s fine!”
I shrugged, and dove in.
After a while, I forgot about the bathing suit, and just enjoyed swimming. Ari turned out to be a cool girl, and funny as heck. She had both Melody and me giggling like crazy. She teased us for being a couple, while never making us feeling awkward about it.
Then Melody’s mom came out with a worried expression on her face, and said, “Girls? I ... need you all to come into the house. Something has happened.”
We scrambled out of the pool (Ari manifesting legs so she could come with us), quickly toweled off, and came into the house. Melody’s mom was waiting for us, and she said, “Girls, we are going to have some extra company tonight. A nearby family has had an emergency, and has asked for us to watch their three daughters.”
“Should I go home?” I asked.
“Actually, I’ve talked to your mother, Bonnie, and if you’re agreeable, I’d like you to stay. Call it your first sleepover”
Something in her voice worried me, and I asked, “Is everything okay?”
Before she could answer, the doorbell rang. Melody’s mom opened the door, and in slithered a huge man - except his bottom half was a snake.
“Oh, a Naga!” Melody said.
I didn’t know what that was, but I had trouble imagining something that would be a problem for this creature. He was not only large, he was well-muscled, and had a serious look on his face.
Then he signaled to someone behind him, and three little girls came into the house. They looked about 8 years old, and at first I thought they were wearing some kind of kitty costume, but then Melody shouted “Were-kitties!”
She started to come towards the girls, but the snake guy growled at her.
She blushed, and said, “Sorry. I’m Melody, this is Bonnie and that’s Ari.”
All three girls blushed, and then one said, “I’m Abby. These are my sisters, Betty and Chloe.”
We all had supper, and then the snake-guy said, “I must go. Be good, girls.”
The three little girls nodded, and then hugged him. Just before he could look stoic again, I’m pretty sure I saw the affection he held for these three girls.
He left, and then Melody’s mom said, “Let’s see what we can find for you girls to watch.”
Despite the difference in our ages, we actually had a lot fun together. We watched TV, played games, and eventually I found myself in the middle of a dog-pile - or rather a cat-pile, with the girls in their kitty forms curled up next to me, with Melody on one side and Ari on the other.
I eventually became sleepy, despite all the questions in my head.
My last thought before I fell asleep was “I hope I like the answers ...”

Help! My girlfriend is a Unicorn!
Chapter 9
The next morning, the six of us shared breakfast with Melody’s mom. (I had oatmeal. Not just because I am now a unicorn, I always loved it.)
After breakfast, Melody’s mom asked Ari to take the girls into the living room to watch TV while Melody and I were asked to help do dishes.
Once we began washing dishes, Melody’s mom sighed, and said, “You two deserve to know what was going on last night. Mr. Twoyoungmen heard about a plot to kidnap those three. Apparently, a young magi named Sabrina wanted to turn them into familiars. Fortunately, thanks to knowing about this ahead of time, friends of the family were able to get them here, where they were safe, and early this morning I got word that Sabrina has been taken into custody, which means this afternoon they can go home.”
“I’m glad they’ll be safe. Does this kind of inter-magical species cooperation happen often?” I asked.
“No, sadly. But for the last few years I have been part of a group with the goal to try and get more of us working together. It has not been easy. Most magical creatures have become so isolated from any not of their own kind that much suspicion and prejudice has developed. But I believe we actually need each other.”
“Well, I am glad things worked out this time. Those girls are sweet, I would have hated to have something happen to them,” I said.
“Me too,” Melody said.
“I’ll finish up, you two have fun with the girls,” Melody’s mom said.
She didn’t have to tell us twice.
****
We had a lot of fun over the next few hours, even when the girls somehow talked me into being their guinea pig when it came to makeup. Now even when I had worn the fancy dress to school, I had stayed makeup free, mostly cause I was afraid I’d look like a clown.
But the girls had a good eye for color, and quickly had the perfect shades to accent my features without making me look overdone.
Melody liked the result so much she got me into a dress and had Ari take a picture of the two of us, which she said she was going to have as the screensaver on her phone. She captioned the photo, “Back off boys, she’s mine.”
Who was I to argue with her about that?
Eventually, the three little girls had to go home, as their’ parents came to pick them up. There were thanks, and hugs, and promises to stay in contact, but anybody who says I teared up ...
Okay so I might have sniffled a little.
****
The next day, I went to church. And no, it didn’t involve any dancing around a maypole, or whatever. My mom and I had been part of a United church for a while, and despite my gender change, I wanted to keep going.
Of course, that meant I was dressed in a dress, again! (I swear, it's a conspiracy !)
Monday was actually mostly uneventful.
Well, right up after the last class when both my mom and Melody’s mom were waiting for us outside the school.
“Something wrong?” I asked.
“Not wrong, but a unique opportunity has come up, and we’d like both of you to participate,” My mom said.
“What kind of opportunity?” Melody asked.
“We’ll talk at home,” Melody’s mom said.
So once we got to Melody’s place, the four of us sat down at the table, and Melody’s mom began to talk.
“For a long time, there have been a group of magical creatures who have come to believe the fact that we are
so segregated is a weakness. The weekend’s success at preventing the kidnapping of those girls has convinced many others of the value of working together. And now we are ready to take the next step,” Melody’s mom said.
“What step would that be, and what has it to do with us?” I asked.
“The next step is to work with our younger generation, have them interact with each other. In short, it was to set up a school for magical creatures. And we would like you both to attend,” Melody’s mom said.
I thought hard about it, and looked over at Melody. She nodded.
“We’re in,” Melody said, and I nodded.
To be continued in Book 2 - “the secret of M.Y.T.H.”
The secret of M.Y.T.H. ( A sequel to "Help! My girlfriend is a unicorn!")
M.Y.T.H.-ing Witch (A M.Y.T.H. prequel)
I can say it, I messed up. But it wasn’t all my fault. I trusted the wrong person.
But I’m getting ahead of myself.
My name is Sabrina, and I’m a witch.
Nope, don’t have a broomstick. Although I guess I could, if I really wanted to make one.
Witches are actually a subset of the race known as the Magi. There are three main subsets - Witches, Warlocks, and Wizards.
Before you ask, no, not all witches are girls, and not all Warlocks or Wizards are guys. It's about what you focus on, not about your gender. See, Witches focus mostly on living things - plants and animals. Warlocks, on the other hand, focus mainly on non-living nature - rocks, waterfalls, even the moon and sun. And Wizards are all about knowledge and creating magical objects. You need a magic ring, or a scroll, a Wizard is your best bet.
Not that these categories are exclusive. In practice, most Magi have at least some skill in all three disciplines. You just tend to be called one or another, depending on your strengths.
Because our world has become less hospitable to magic of all kinds, many if not all magi prefer to use magic rarely. Magic is like a kind of energy and it's never wise to run your reserves dry, as it can take quite some time to refuel, so to speak.
We also tend to keep to ourselves, and do not mingle much with regular people. We might be centuries removed from the time when scared peasants would try to set some mage on fire, but we are encouraged to use caution regardless.
Which means I have few friends.
Which is why I was willing to hang around Klarion and made the mistake of trusting him.
I honestly don’t know how much of our friendship was real, and how much was him playing me. Maybe at first it was as good for him to have another of his kind to talk to. He told me he had been raised by a golem, a being made of earth brought to life by magic. For reasons Klarion never explained, and maybe he didn’t even know, the golem was made to resemble a famous mage, Morgan Le Fay.
In any case every once in awhile, he’d escape his golem “babysitter” and have a little fun - by using his magic to create chaos.
Then a little while ago he had used his magic to make the food at a school cafeteria come to life and start fighting. I confess, when he told me what he had done, I laughed, and thought his idea of a “food fight” was pretty funny.
Then he told me he had learned something doing this spell. It should have been draining for him to make even two food creatures, but he found himself tapping into a well of magical power - or manna, as it’s called, that was far greater than anything he had heard of before.
So once the “food fight” was over, he started some experiments, and came to believe that while we had always been taught that mana had been in decline for the last couple of thousand years, suddenly there was more than there had been since the great days of magic.
To find out for sure, he wanted me to help him testing this, by creating a familiar. Usually a witch will take a family pet for a familiar, but he wanted to try to do something outrageous.
He had learned there was a family of werecats near who had three children, and he wanted me to bind them to serve me.
I promise, normally I would have said no way to such an idea. It’s one thing to use a pet, but to take kids, even were- kids, well, that’s wrong.
But I found myself agreeing.
Now, here is the thing I did wrong. “Protect yourself at all times” is one of the first lessons of being a mage. But I had a bit of a crush on him, and let my guard down, allowing him to use a suggestion spell.
It probably helped that he kept saying they wouldn’t be hurt, they would just be like my best friends as well as familiars, and that he’d arrange everything.
All I had to do was sneak out at the proper time, take a potion he had prepared for me that would “open” my power up even further, and wait.
But what he actually arranged was me to get caught and blamed for all of it.
The were-family was warned, and sent the children to safety while they tracked me down, and found me in the woods behind my house acting like I had been drinking, giggling to myself and cooing over having were-kittens for friends.
When I sobered up, I had to face the music. My parents had been scared when they realized I was missing, then worried I had become some kind of maniac willing to kidnap were-kids. Then they were upset at me for letting myself get into this mess.
I honestly half expected to end up being put in a magic-proof cel until I died.
But they brought in a truthsayer, and realized I had been taken advantage of.
As for Klarion, nobody knows where he went. They figure that had been his idea from the beginning - to use me as a distraction which would allow him to find a place where even the best magic couldn’t find him, so he would have the time to figure a way to take advantage of the return of magic.
And me? I’ve been given a chance to redeem myself.
I’m being sent to a brand new school for magical creatures of all kinds. Apparently the revival of magic is a big enough deal that a group representing a bunch of different magical species got together, and decided what was needed was for all of us to learn from each other as we learned about our powers.
I’ve promised to use this second chance wisely, and I will.
But I am hoping that once I’m strong enough, I’ll have an opportunity to have a little talk with a certain witch boy ...
End.
The Secret of M.Y.T.H. - revised
As I got dressed for my first day at the new school, I reflected on how much had changed since this time last year.
Last year I was just a regular boy, with a girl as a friend who would soon be my girlfriend, trying to navigate the beginnings of puberty and typical school stuff, nothing unusual about me at all.
Now, pretty much none of that is still true.
I am way beyond “usual”, nowhere near “regular”.
And not even a boy.
I’m a girl.
A girl with magic, who regularly transforms into a unicorn. (Or more accurately, a unicorn who regularly transforms into a girl).
I learned that not only is magic real, there are all kinds of magical creatures out there. And sadly, not all of them are nice.
But this would be the first time for meeting a bunch of magical creatures at once, as I would be going to a school specifically for them.
So I was a touch nervous about making a good impression.
Fortunately, I won't be going alone, as my girlfriend Melody is also a unicorn, and will be going with me.
Melody’s mom was going to drive us to the campus today, so we could be part of the orientation, so I finished getting dressed. I was wearing a skirt, not because of the dress code of the school, but because my girlfriend is an evil girl who used the dreaded puppy-dog eyes on me until I said yes.
You’d think being a girl now myself I’d be more able to resist, but no such luck ...
Dressed and fed, I walked over to Melody’s house, and soon we were on our way to the school.
We drove for about an hour out of town, to an area that was made up of farmland. We turned into a dirt road that led to a gate with the letters “M.Y.T.H.” above it. We drove through the gate ...
And into heaven.
Okay, I’m exaggerating a little.
But the campus was beautiful. There was a large lake with a river that wound around the campus, there was a huge field with a gigantic barn next to it, there was an enormous cafeteria, an even larger gym, a couple of dorm buildings, a very large main building where our classes would be held, and a building that I thought was a large dovecote, until I saw an honest to goodness dragon fly out of the top.
“Wow,” I exclaimed.
Once we had done a quick tour, Melody’s mom dropped us off at the gym where our official orientation would start. We walked through the entry doors into the gymnasium and looked around for a moment before we spotted a banner saying "Orientation for new students".
We were the first students there, but soon others began filing in. Even though they (mostly) looked like regular boys and girls, I could feel the magic they had, and saw little hints of the kind of creature they were.
Then I heard someone call out for Melody and I.
I looked, and it was Ari, who I had met and had a sleepover with. The three of us chatted for a while, and then we were joined by three more girls - the triplets Abby, Betty, and Chloe, three were-kittens who had also been part of our sleepover.
“What are you girls doing here?” Melody asked.
All three girls blushed, and Abby said, “Were-cats mature a little faster than humans. Mom said we’re ready for junior high.”
“Cool!” I exclaimed.
A teacher waved and called out for Abby, Betty, and Chloe. Abby said, “Oh, I think that’s our teacher, gotta go!”
Giggling, all three ran off.
Another teacher called for Ari, and she said goodbye and headed out. A few minutes later, while we were waiting for our own names to be called, two girls came over and introduced themselves as Elizabeth and Rachel. Elizabeth was leading a dog on a leash, and when I asked about him, she told me that Biggun (as she called him), was her familiar.
“Oh, so you’re a Magi?” Melody asked, “We’ve met a few not so nice magi.”
Elizabeth nodded, and said, “yeah, some are jerks. But, I promise, We’re not like that.”
I could feel her sincerity, and said, “in that case, I hope we can be friends.”
We chatted for a few minutes, and then I heard my name being called followed by Melody’s. We held hands as we walked towards the teacher, ready to start our first day of school ...

The secret of M.Y.T.H. chapter 2
The teacher introduced herself as Mrs. D’Arcy, and said she would be our teacher for our “mundane” classes.
“We don't want to neglect math, science, and social studies, just because you have magic,” she said.
“Makes sense,” Melody said.
“The way classes will work is like this: You’ll have 50 minute classes, with a 20 minute break in between. So Social Studies class starts at 8 AM, ends at 8:50, you get a break, and then at 9:10 the next class, Math, begins. At 10, you get another break, and the next class, which is English, starts at 10:20. That class will go to 11:10, you get a 20 minute break, and then the last class of the morning, which covers Science, starts at 11:30 and ends at 12:20. Then comes lunch, and you get one hour and ten minutes.
The afternoon classes are different, as they will be based on powers, magic, survival, combat, and the like. That class will last from 1:30 to 3 PM, with a short ten minute break in the middle. At three, you get your last class of the day, which is an elective of your choice. The electives available will depend on demand, so select at least a couple of options in case your first choice cannot be made available. Anyone who does not choose an elective will be given a 50 minute study period instead. Any questions?”
“What about the dorms?” Melody asked.
“Dorms are single-occupancy rooms that share some common areas in groups of 4, and then larger common areas where more students can gather. so mixing of genders can happen. Grades mostly stick together during school hours, but can mix after hours, and your next-door neighbor for dorms could be any grade,” Miss D’Arcy replied.
“Cool!” I exclaimed.
Then an older, serious looking woman approached us. “Melody? Bonnie? My name is Victoria Drakae, and I am the headmistress here. Will you two please come with me to my office?”
“Are we in trouble, ma’am?” Melody asked, nervously.
“Actually, the opposite. But please come this way.”
I replied, “Okay” then I shrugged, and followed the headmistress.
When we got to the office, we found the Naga who had dropped off the were-kittens at our house.
“This is Mr. Ozezs. He’s going to be the head of security here.”
“Hello,” Melody and I said together.
He nodded, and then did something complicated with his hands. There was a poof of smoke, and then in front of him was a young girl, maybe fourteen years old.
“This is Sabrina. She has been ... paroled into the custody of the school.”
“I told you, it was Karion, not me trying to get those were kittens,” Sabrina whined.
“And we believe you. Which is why you are here instead of a magic-proof cell,” Ozez replied firmly.
“That, and the fact I know the secret that Karion found out.”
“What secret?” I asked.
“You know how magic has been fading for the last couple of thousand years? Well, that’s not going to be a problem much longer. Magic is making a comeback.”
Melody and I looked at each other in shock ...

Chapter 3
Mrs. Drakae sighed, and said, “That wont be a secret much longer regardless. But I was hoping to get the kids a chance to get settled before we told them.”
“I’m confused, what is she talking about?” I asked.
“When Klarion did this prank at a school, where he made the food start fighting, he realized the whole spell was ... easy. He had access to much more power than he expected. Eventually he figured out there was much more magic than there used to be. Or at least that’s what he monologued while he was setting me up to take the fall for kidnaping some were-kitties.”
“So you really weren't at fault for that?” I asked.
“I was really stupid, and trusted him, allowing him to put me under a suggestion spell. I’m ... really sorry.” (If you want to read her story, you can find it titled “A M.Y.T.H.-ing witch” https://bigclosetr.us/topshelf/fiction/70086/myth-ing-witch-... )
I looked at the young girl, and she looked sincere to me, so I said, “I’ll forgive you. I hope the girls do too.”
“Thanks,” she said, “I hope they will.”
“Why don't you girls go have lunch.” Mrs. Drakae said.
We all went to the large cafeteria, although calling it that doesn’t really do it justice. It’s a massive dining hall with a kitchen capable of preparing specialized meals for any magical creature.
Apparently, the teachers were trying to get us to mix together rather than stay with others of the same kind, as they had set up the tables so they had a mix of magical species at each table. And I could tell that at least in some cases there was a lot of awkwardness about that.
But there were kids belonging to different magical species making friends too, just as Melody and I had done with the were-kittens.
Melody and I went and found our table, and found an interesting mix of magical races. One of them was a girl who turned out to be an actual vampire, although not the “I vant to drink your blood” type. She told me that her clan had debated long and hard about sending someone to the school, because of the negative reaction they felt she would get, but she had volunteered, believing that it was a necessary step to any interspecies cooperation.
Another was a young girl who was able to take both animal and human form, much like us unicorns. In her case, she could shift from girl to fox and back again.
Once lunch was over, all the students came back to the assembly hall where Mrs. Drakae addressed us all, telling us about the increase of magic.
She said, “While we do not know the cause, we believe this trend will continue for some time. Which means among other things, we are going to get more magical creatures being created. For reasons we do not yet understand, some humans are being transformed into magical creatures.”
One of the students raised her hand, and asked, “Why should we worry about more magic?”
“For several reasons” Mrs. Drakae replied, “First, access to more magic means we are all going to have to exercise more control, or even a simple spell could backfire and cause great harm. Plus there is the fact that while most magical races are contributing to this school, and to the idea of working together, not everyone agrees. And those people will be more dangerous the more magic is available.”
“Like Klarion?” I asked.
“Perhaps not.” She replied, “We have sent an invitation to him to attend.”
“Say what? Why would you do that?” I practically shouted.
“Because I would rather have him here, where we could keep an eye on him, and possibly even redirect his ... current tendencies towards something more positive, than letting him go free, perhaps getting worse.”
“Could end up being a mistake” a man’s voice said, and then the man himself came onto the stage.
I wasn't sure how old he was, because while his face was unlined, he carried himself with a kind of weariness, like someone who had seen and done too much.
Mrs. Drakae said, “May I introduce Silver John, who will be assisting Mr. Ozezs with security on campus.”
I asked the man “you were saying bringing Klarion here would be a mistake?”
“He’s already shown signs of psychopathic behavior. Having him here would be putting the other kids here in danger.” John replied.
“Do you believe he’s beyond redemption?” I asked.
“Let’s just say I dont want to risk the other students to find out.”
“All right perhaps we should see if there are any alternatives.” Mrs. Drakae said, and then added, “any other questions?”
“No Ma’am” several voices replied in unison.
“All right,” She said, “Everyone go finish unpacking, and then you have the rest of the afternoon as free time.”
I was astounded to discover that my dorm looked like a typical dorm room on the outside.
For one thing, it was bigger on the inside than the out.
It had an honest-to God stable for my unicorn form, including a good selection of hay and oats and warm mash, a trough will a continual supply of fresh water, a specially designed toilet, and a sleep bar (unicorns, like horses, sleep standing up. The sleep bar will keep me from accidently falling over in my sleep.)
My human side was just as well looked after. If I for some reason didnt want to go to the cafeteria, I had a full sized kitchen with a fridge,a stove, and a dishwasher.
I also had a bedroom with a large canopy bed, a gigantic bookcase, two dressers, a walk-in closet with a shoe rack. There was also a full bathroom, including a tub able to hold two of me, which had a jet feature if I wanted a jacuzzi, and a computer desk, a makeup area with a chair, table, and a large mirror, and a couch with a table and a TV set.
I would have called the bedroom set-up “girly” before my transformation, but since I was now a girl, I could be as girly as I liked.
My stuff was soon delivered to my room, and an unseen servant had put everything in the proper places in no time flat.
With that task done, I went to find my girlfriend, so we could find out what fun we could get into before bedtime ...

Chapter 4
As it turned out, it was a pretty tame night.
Mr. Ozezs and Silver John kept a watch over us kids, and in any case Melody and tried to be good girls and make our folks proud.
That said, we had a pretty good time anyway. They had set up a pool, so we swam and then warmed ourselves by a large bonfire making s’mores, singing goofy songs , and went to bed feeling pretty good.
The next morning we began following our class schedule, although our classes were more an introduction to the course, the teacher, and our classmates if we hadn’t met them yet. The last class of the day, because we hadn’t selected an elective yet, was just a short primer on the electives available, and an introduction to the teachers who would handle the elective classes.
Both Melody and I decided we would take Phys Ed as our elective, so we could end our school day with a bit of physical activity.
So we met the P.E. teacher, who was a centaur named Mr. Tor. To my surprise, he had gym outfits for everyone who was going to take Phys Ed, including shoes.
We took our outfits back to our respective rooms, and then went to see what we could do with ourselves until suppertime.
Mostly that involved trading stories with the other kids, and I learned a few things about some of the magical races in the process.
The next day, school started in earnest.
Honestly, the first half of the day wasn’t too different from what we would have gotten in a “normal” school. Mrs. D’Arcy covered the mundane subjects, and I found her very easy to listen to. She told us she was not quite human, as she had been given the essence of a goddess, and she had the gift to sense and heal the pain of others.
Lunch time gave us another opportunity to get to know some of the kids better. It seemed like most of them had parents who were part of the movement to get cooperation between the various magical species, which made sense. I also learned that some magical creatures had negative myths about unicorns, which Mel and I did our best to correct.
The afternoon was very different from anything we would have gotten at a regular school.
We joined the other magical creatures of all types who were practicing their magical abilities.
After class, I sat beside Mel, and we were holding hands watching the sun set.
“I think this is going to work. All magical creatures working together.” Mel said.
“I hope so,” I replied, “I have a feeling this unity will be tested, and soon.”
She didn't say anything more, and so we sat there looking towards the future - together.
End?
