I'm looking for a story that I read quite some time ago. A while back, I remembered parts of it and decided to re-read it. But, I can't seem to find it.

It involved a boy and his two siblings. The mom had died and with a little money, he begins to hitchhike with his siblings to his grandmother's house some distance away. On the way there, they are rescued by strangers who think the boy is really a girl.

Eventually, he reaches grandma's house with his siblings. In a dramatic moment, he gets to meet his biological father (whom he has never met), and is accepted as the girl that (she) is.
