Is there anybody out there?

Messages to the Aliens

by J. E. Melton

I thought I might be crazy so I wrote myself a letter.
I never mailed it though, I ought to have known better,
Now I’ll never know what it said!
Living alone inside my head sending messages to the aliens,
Messages to the aliens, messages to the aliens.

Is there anybody out there, Is there anyone who cares?
Is there anyone who really knows
How to tell if they’re living or dead?
Living alone inside my head sending messages to the aliens,
Messages to the aliens, messages to the aliens.

She thought I might be crazy so she sent me to the doctor.
I never went near him though, the truth would have rocked her,
I went to the movies instead!
Living alone inside my head sending messages to the aliens,
Messages to the aliens, messages to the aliens.

Is there anybody out there, Is there anyone who cares?
Is there anyone who really knows
Just what the butterfly said?
Living alone inside my head sending messages to the aliens,
Messages to the aliens, messages to the aliens.

They knew that I was crazy, so they locked me up forever
I don’t mind it though, it keeps me out of the weather,
How will I know when I’m dead?
Living alone inside my head sending messages to the aliens,
Messages to the aliens, messages to the aliens.

Is there anybody out there, Is there anyone who cares?
Is there anyone who really knows
How to tell if you’re living or dead?
Living alone inside my head sending messages to the aliens,
Messages to the aliens, messages to the aliens.

Did you ever think you were crazy? Did you send yourself a letter?
If you’ve already mailed it, you ought to have known better,
Aren’t you afraid to know what it said?
Living alone inside your head sending messages to the aliens,
Messages to the aliens, messages to the aliens.

Messages to the aliens, messages to the aliens,
Messages to the aliens...
...messages...
...to the aliens...

Poetry

and I never have really got on but I did read this simply because Erin submitted it.

I don't pretend to understand it all and so I won't attempt to venture an opinion. I think I get the idea but I have a degree in being wrong so may be completely wide of the mark.

A poem or picture that needs explaining to me is wasted on me. No doubt there are those for whom this makes more sense.

This is the very reason that I have hardly ever read poetry that has been posted on this site.

At least I did read this.

Sorry.

Susie

It's a song

A hard rocker in the style of Meatloaf or Debbie Harry. Another piece I wrote almost thirty years ago, in a Wendy's while waiting for a bus to take me far away from the town I'd spent most of my life in, following a girl I'd had the misfortune to fall in love with. When I read it, I can smell the hamburgers, thick and juicy.

I was going to say!

It does sound like a song -- you get it right away.

If you ever find the aliens...

... mention me. I may be an alien changeling, exchanged at age ten... :-)

Interesting. It's hard for me to picture the "song" without the notes. Are those available as well?

I never wrote any music for this one

Like any rocker it's more about beat than melody, anyway.

I think we all feel like aliens at times.

Hugs,
Erin

Maybe it was the lines about living deep in one's head, but your song reminded
me of Syd Barrett, semi-famous casualty of the 1960's psychedelic music scene.
On my first read-through (prior to your describing the tempo) I imagined
he was singing it, in that plaintive and oddly childlike voice of his.
Then I scribbled this song. I stole your line because I like you :)

WISH I WAS HERE

I don't care who's Pink these days
That was all far too much noise
Sonic attacks from screaming girls
the fat paisley Rolls Royce
The gyring sky is not my friend
I stay in here with my Mum
I suppose you could say
I am comfortably numb

Messages to the Aliens...
Someday my ship will come in.

On good days there's the garden
We go outside for tea
the rose's thorns are honest-
right there for you to see
The ozone's tourniquet embrace
unending, no not fun
As I becoming the Alien
I'm praying not the only one

Messages to the Aliens...
This lonesome busy signal bleeds me dry.

Looking for my slippers
I'd put them in the fridge
My mind's foundations dwindling
all acid under the bridge
Thursdays the basement calls to me
It's safe down here, come hide.
The lunatics are hijacking
the octapus ride.

Messages to the aliens, but now the message is whack...
Tom tom telegraphy down the cold steel rail.

Are you the one....

putting all those anonymous notes in my mailbox, telling me to buy things I don't need? There are days when I feel like an alien, and maybe you just confirmed it! ;)

I was reading along and found myself bobbing my head, almost chanting with the rhythm - definitely had the feeling it was about escape before I read your note... oh, BTW, well done!

Escape is the message. :)

I got some odd looks, writing this one in a public place. :)

I wrote a better letter,
It got posted,
I got toasted
When they read it.

ET and his friend, mend
Their ray gun,
Oh what fun,
Now I'm deaded!
