Customer Service

It had been a typically slow day in the Walmart electronics department. New games and movies come in on Friday, so usually by mid-week I end up covering some other department as well, just to give me something to do.

So it was just luck that I was in the area when a boy came up and asked for help. He looked to be about thirteen, with sandy blond hair and green eyes partially obscured by glasses.

“I would like a girl controller, please” He said softly.

I thought about what he meant, and then found a controller in a pretty purple color.

“Would this one do?” I asked.

“Yes. Do you have any girl games?” He asked.

I took him over to the cabinet where the games were stored, and asked him for which game system he wanted the game. He said, “The Wii, please.”

I took him over to the cabinet, and looked at the selection of games, and found one popular with girls.

“Will this one do?” I asked.

He nodded, and I took the game and the controller to the checkout counter.

He was joined by an older boy, who looked at what he had selected.

“You sure about this? You know Dad’s gonna make a scene.”

“I’m tired of hiding, Tom. I read online someone describing being trans as being a butterfly who gets to paint their own wings. Well, I’m ready to start painting. No matter what Dad says.”

“Well, I’ll back you as much as I’m able ... little sis.”

The younger child beamed.

The older boy paid for the game and the controller, and the two of them left.

Later, on my lunch break, I thought about the kid, and how brave she was. I couldn’t imagine trying to tell my parents something like that at her age.

So I said a little prayer for her, and her family, and then went back to finish my shift.

End.

Damn fine customer service

Damn fine customer service there. I haves seen far too many employees who would do the least to help someone, that was good work getting what the customer requested.

And taking a step and being true to yourself is the toughest step, hopefully the consequences for doing that aren't as bad :(

I'm told STFU more times in a day than most people get told in a lifetime

Excellent Customer Service

I agree, customer service was excellent here. I recall Space Quest IV, where somewhere in the future, the janitor/protagonist had to disguise himself as a lady for a particular reason. He was pretending to get the dress for someone else, but the woman helping him called him, "Sicko" at one point. But then, Space Quest IV was released in the early nineties.

At least here, in addition to the customer service, the big brother was supporting his little sibling.

Regarding your blog post about being blocked. It is a good idea, when you're writing something long, or are blocked on something, to dash off the occasional flash. It proves you can still write, it exercises your ability to be brief, and it proves you're still there and active. It can also get new readers for your other stories, once they go off the radar.

The Tschüss to make assumptions about what the other person wants.

I felt a touch there at the end,

So was the little girl you?

Dems fightin worlds....

Pfft I was trying to be a normal boy at that age!

You on the other hand were already quite girly at that age.

You were NEVER a tomboy

The only TOM boy in your life was your boyfriend.

Sorry but girly girls can't be tomboys.

First, I am so happy the site

First, I am so happy the site is back to normal. Good work guys!

What an interesting way to broach an awkward subject. Did dad take the hint??

Walmart customer service

has been all right by me. I am partially handicapped and every time I go to the customer service desk and ask for a shopper to assist me, I am told to wait a few minutes, someone is on the way. Then we go and do my shopping. I have apologized many times for taking up their valuable time, and they tell me that I am more important than stocking the shelves. I am very thankful to Walmart for having this service. This story reminded me of my experiences with Walmart customer service. Thank you for sharing.

With confidence and forbearance, we will have the strength to move forward.
