LOST IN A LOST WORLD

I woke up today, I was crying
Lost in a lost world

In north-east England, 'fanny' is a generic term for available young women. For example, 'Get yourself down the Black Bull. There's tons of fanny in there on a Friday night.'

LOST IN A LOST WORLD

The music wasn’t particularly loud, but you still had you raise your voice to be heard.

“I know what you mean,” I said. “I reckon they sometimes go too far. What was the name of that series on a few years ago, the one where the lass had her face pushed into a pan of boiling fat before they shot her? What I don’t understand is how the fuck the script editor allowed that to pass. I tell a lie there, what I really don’t get is how the writer came up with the idea in the first place. Killing off your female characters is bad enough, ‘cause without exception your show doesn’t have enough of them, but doing it like that…?”

The guy on the other side of the table slurped his beer.

“It does sound a bit sick,” he agreed, his eyes wandering to the scantily dressed girl ordering a Bacardi Breezer at the bar. I guessed that he was about ten years younger than me, his eyes relatively untarnished by the bitterness of rejection. He wasn’t a fanny magnet — neither of us were — but experience hadn’t yet overcome the genetic programming that conditioned him to believe anything was possible when you entered the mating game.

I lit a cigarette. I was feeling mellow, happy to have slidden into a conversation with a complete stranger who seemed to share so many of my views.

“Sick doesn’t begin to describe it,” I went on. “I’ve done a bit of writing myself, and–“

“You’re a writer?”

“Just for the Internet.”

“What sort of stuff d’you…no, hang on, looking at you I’d say it’s Science Fiction.” He held up his hands. “I didn’t mean to put you down as a nerd or anything.”

“Don’t worry,” I laughed. “I’m used to that. Well, it’s a kind of SF. I like to call it ‘alternative’ fiction. You take an ordinary situation and slowly turn it surreal. Trouble is, I’m not very good at it. Always descends into soft porn.”

“You write porn?”

“It doesn’t start out that way. Last thing I wrote was about a bloke who lands his spaceship on a planet where there used to be a human colony but they’ve lost all touch with earth. What he finds is a society consisting solely of women. Turns out the computers they used to create the nanobots that were supposed to terraform the environment didn’t see a reason to keep the Y chromosome so they eradicated it. The thing this bloke doesn’t realise is that the little buggers are still active, and they’re working on him now. He’s about to become a woman, just like the rest of them.”

He narrowed his eyes.

“Are you a poof?”

The first three pints I’d guzzled would have said ‘tell him to mind his own business’. The fourth regarded the question as an insult to my manhood.

“No, I’m bloody not!” I exclaimed.

“But you can happily write about a bloke who grows a pair of tits?”

“Yeah, why not?”

“You’ve got this problem with a bird who gets boiling hot fat in her face, but you don’t see anything wrong with…” He stood up, shaking his head. “I’ve heard some shit in my time…”

I watched him walk over to the table beside the front window. There were people there he evidently knew. The music stopped long enough for me to hear one phrase.

“That fuckin’ arsehole over there…”

I finished my drink and left. Outside, it was beginning to rain. The last bus had gone, and the taxi rank on the other side of the street was empty.

I looked at the pub doorway. The world was lost, but that didn’t mean I’d forfeited the right to hack my own way through the jungle of existence. And I’d need a shot or two of something warm and invigorating before I was ready to face the long walk home.

I went back in.

Sadly ...

... I suspect there are people like that in the world still but I prefer to believe there are fewer of them than there used to be. Is this when the 'shot or two' (of single malt?) leads him into terra incognita?

Interesting fragment.

I Think He'd Have Gone For Morgan's Spiced

I'm lucky enough to have a circle of friends who wouldn't bat an eyelid if I came out as trans or gay tomorrow. That's not quite true, they'd say 'why on earth didn't you say something before?'

This conversation was based on one I had in a Hartlepool pub in May 1998. Sunderland had just lost to Charlton in the play-offs on penalties, and I'd got the bus into town in one of those 'what the hell' moods only a football fan can really understand. It led to me talking to someone about the episode guide I was writing for the Save Dark Skies website. Fuelled by quite a lot of real ale, I made an incautious remark about one of the show's characters, asserting that she was so convincing I'd fallen in love with her. Suddenly everything turned sour. I was a weirdo, someone people wanted nothing to do with.

There was no real harm done, of course. It didn't turn violent, and if I'd met this guy again no doubt we'd have laughed about it.

we are all lost, maybe

but I never want to surrender hope that one day, we will all be found.

The flip side is that somehow it's inherently wrong to be transformed into a woman but not terrribly objectionable to abuse a woman to the point of disfigurement and death? I loved this last bit:

The world was lost, but that didn’t mean I’d forfeited the right to hack my own way through the jungle of existence.

Thank you!

Somebody Exploded An H-Bomb Today

Prejudice is rarely underpinned by rationality. This guy saw the protagonist as a threat, and did what his gut instincts told him to do to defend himself. I don't see an easy solution to this.

Thank you for the compliment regarding the penultimate sentence. Sometimes words appear on the screen and I don't have a clue where they came from.

You're going to hate me for this. It's not a challenge. Like everything else I post on this site, its only purpose is to make people think.

Dear Diary, what a day it's been
Dear Diary, it's been just like a dream
Woke up too late, wasn't where I should have been
For goodness sake, what's happening to me?
Write lightly
Yours truly

Somebody exploded an H-bomb today. But it wasn't anybody I know.

This story brought back a couple of memories The Seventh Sojourn was my favorite Moody Blues album, I even still have it on vinyl :) There is a pub in Rutherglen Scotland, called the Black Bull my grandfather took me there for my very first pint at 16, my how much water has passed under the bridge since then. Thanks for writing this.

Stranger in Weird Zone

Sometimes just a conversation with a stranger that touches on transgender issues
can lead to a weird place that forces you to confront just how differently a lot of
"normal" folks see things, leaving you feeling like a bit of an alien in your own country.
Or not even transgender, but gender roles in general, like the guy at work
who saw the breast cancer awareness logo on a cup of yogurt I was eating
and started grousing on how THEY would never do the same for testicle cancer,
a weird bitter rant against what this bit of women's empowerment or whatever he saw it
as was supposedly costing "us guys", and then how his eyes narrowed, and I could
see a sense of betrayal at my lack of sympathy for his weird sniveling rant that was
bizarre and surreal, as I explained the history of breast cancer awareness movement,
and what a tough fight that was for the women who started it to even get it mentioned
on TV, that it wasn't something just given to them by some PC liberal "they",
and he was looking at me like I had grown another head for even knowing so much about it...
Some day I might finish the short story that encounter inspired,
and that this story of yours reminds me of (PINK RIBBON BLUES), and post it here
even though it's only tangentally "tg", because my perception was and is female.
I seem to recall you wrote a blog here once (or someone did) asking people
how tg a story has to be to be tg; and I think this story shows that it doesn't have
to have wall-to-wall nanobot sex changes to qualify if it raises the right questions;
has the right spirit, or whatever I'm saying; and this subtle little gem sure does.

Am just seeing if this will prevent me from being able to delete the above comment.
I keep getting a sort of virtual agoraphobia and disappearing down weird rabbit holes.

That's What I Love About This Site

You never know what to expect next.

I went to see the Dickies last summer at the Academy in Newcastle. Great band, hilarious front man.

You know what I'm going to be doing all day, don't you? Nah nah nah, nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, nah nah nah nah...

Might as well pass the meme on.

“Are you a poof?”

Most men or even women who think in that manner are actually afraid to admit that they have some sort of attraction to those supposedly sinful thoughts! At least that is what I have surmised from my trek in transitioning anyway.

Nearly all of the people who at first thought or acted like I was doing something terrible now smile and actually associate with me in a public setting with little or no problems with either myself or themselves!

Life is good. :}
