Trevor is from one of the wealthiest families in Ravencrest. His father is a distinguished man that everyone respects and fears but he's practically invisible to his peers. He enjoys his quiet non-existence but all of that changes on his 16th birthday when he discovers the family secret and nothing about his life is non-existent again.

Author's Note: Here's Ch.11, I'm not sure if I would call this filler or not. There is a nice little ending that sets things up for the remainder of the story. Might be a few days before Ch.12 is posted because I didn't get a chance to write it and I want to write it and Ch.13 before I post it. I'd like to thank djkauf for the editing and everyone else for loving my universe so much.

Ch.11

“This the place?” asked Carson as he pulled up in front of the building. “Master Chang’s, it sounds like a Chinese restaurant?”

I ignored the comment, instead looking at the building before us. It was strange that I never noticed that the town had a martial arts dojo. It was a little place wedged between a small Christian bookstore and a tiny Italian eatery. The only thing that differentiated it from the other places on either side was its name. I pulled a slip of paper out of my hoodie just to make sure I had the right place. Hey, stranger things have happened, especially in this town.

“This is it I guess,” I said, confirming we had the right address.

Carson nodded. “I’m going to head to the gym. You have my cell number; give me a call when you’re done.”

I nodded and left his monstrous truck. He waited until I was standing on the curb before he pulled away. I watched the truck go, glad that he wasn’t going to be around to embarrass me. I loved my cousin, of course, but Carson had this way of making himself the center of attention. Sometimes that wasn’t a good thing either, because most of the time he was making an ass out of himself doing it. The ladies loved him and some of the guys worshiped him but a lot of people laughed at him, too. Of course, none of them did it to his face. I used to be one of those laughing ones actually. Carson tried too hard to be the buffoon, making others like him. If he just decided to be himself, he’d be surprised at how many friends he actually got.

I took a deep breath before entering the building though. When I let it out, I could see my breath. It was a little cold for the middle of September but at least it was the weekend. I hated sitting in class when they refused to turn the heat on until like November. Now that it was Saturday, I could bundle up a bit and not look like the only idiot dressed too warmly. There was another reason I loved that it was Saturday, it was the main reason actually---school was over for a few days. The rest of the week had gone by fairly normally, well a lot more than Monday. After getting home Monday night, I spent a lot of time thinking about the car, the body and what just happened. I had trouble sleeping that whole night actually.

In the morning there was nothing on the news about it, which was strange. It was absent from the paper too. I tried to talk to Tommy about what he saw but he refused to say anything. He said he wanted to forget it, which I understood completely. I did ask Carson about it on the ride to school and he told me to forget it too. “Things are taken care of, that’s all you need to know,” he said when I pressed him for more info. So I tried to put it behind me. That’s how my Tuesday went, trying to forget something that was hard to forget. By Thursday, it was almost completely gone from my mind until I saw the news story when I got back home from school, apparently Maury Goldsmith---a very prominent real estate agent---died of a fatal heart attack. When they showed his picture, I recognized enough of the man to realize that he was the very same one from the woods. I realized that that’s how things worked in this town. Someone died---killed by one of The Unseen---and the authorities covered it up. First, it was Dad’s lawyer then the Thompsons and now Mr. Goldsmith. It made me wonder how many other people died under mysterious means only to have their true deaths covered up.

And how many more were still to come.

I tried to force the dismal thoughts from my mind as I heard the bell ding and I got my first true look inside Master Chang’s. It might have sounded like a cheesy Chinese restaurant but on the inside, it was anything but. I used to like watching kung fu movies, there was something about seeing two guys kick the hell out of one another. Most of it was done outside of the dojo but when the characters actually got to the dojo, it looked exactly like this. There were blue mats on the floor, punching bags in the corner. There was a wall that was one huge mirror just like you see in the movies. Also just like in the movies, there was a class going on, all the participants dressed in white outfits.

I lingered near the door, watching with interest.

There was a class of twenty or so, all practicing kicking or something. I scanned the faces, trying to see if any of them looked familiar. It appeared though that I’d come in on a younger group, most of the kids here looked like middle school age. As I was looking at them, I noticed movement off to my right. I turned and a pretty blonde girl was coming toward me. She was dressed in a white shirt and gray sweats, her hair pulled back in a tight ponytail. I looked at the direction she was coming from, finding a whole different part of the dojo that you couldn’t see from the door. This area had a boxing ring and more mats with some workout equipment in the far corner.

As she got closer, I could smell her sweat. It was quite overpowering to my enhanced senses.

“Are you Tracy?”

That kind of surprised me. She smiled at my confusion.

“I’m Carly, Chris’s older sister” She held out her hand, which I shook, still a bit confused. She clarified quickly. “He said you might be stopping by, asked me to show you around.”

Confusion still not dissipating.

“Ummm” I said and she laughed.

“My little brother threw you into the deep end without floaties didn’t he?”

I nodded. “He told me to come here yesterday but didn’t say much more than that.”

I knew there was a dojo in town because Chris mentioned it when I was signing up for the Club. It was mentioned once or twice at the only Club meeting I attended but I didn’t really know much more than that. The meeting was yesterday after school but it only appeared to be Chris and me there. The Club had more members apparently but they rarely made the meetings. So after Chris told me where to meet him, giving me directions, we called it quits. I was a bit disappointed actually, thinking that maybe we might actually do something. But as it turns out the Martial Arts Club might have been a bit of a dud after all. I now knew why there was no one signing up for it.

“So Chris told you nothing?” I shook my head, she laughed. “That’s Chris for you. Craig is the more responsible twin that’s for sure.”

I nodded, forgetting that Chris was a twin. I knew his brother Craig only by reputation. He was a bit of a brain, in a lot of advanced classes actually. I was smart but nowhere near as intelligent as Craig Harper. The guy was probably going to be Valedictorian of our senior class. In contrast, his brother Chris was probably going to be lucky enough to finish tenth grade. All Chris seemed to care about were computers and karate.

“Well this is the dojo,” said Carly as she waved her arms around lazily, clearly Carly and Chris had more in common than he did with his own twin. “It’s not much to look at but I think Dad would have been proud of it.”

“Your Dad?”

She nodded. “This was his dream child. He started it up when the twins were about two years or so. Sadly he and Mom never got to see it come to much after that.”

I was surprised. I never realized that the Harper Twins were a lot like me. Of course, both their parents were dead but I knew how they felt in a way. It was horrible not knowing Mom. I loved Constance but I still yearned for my own mother. Knowing now that Chris and Craig went through something similar made me feel closer to them somehow. I would definitely think of Chris differently that’s for sure.

“So do they live with you?” I asked, concerned for their well being all of the sudden.

Carly laughed. “Hardly. Do I look like someone capable of raising two little brats like them?” She laughed even louder. “After Mom and Dad passed we moved in with my uncle Patrick. He’s sorta like the family Patriarch but I’m sure you know all about that Little Miss Locke.”

She winked at the last bit. I knew Patrick Harper but I never made the connection. Looking around this place now, looking at Carly and thinking about Chris, it was hard to imagine. Mr. Harper was up there as far as rich men went. Not quite as financially sound as say us or the Stiles but he was wealthy in his own right. He owned the newspaper---the Ravencrest Gazette. The locals called it the “Raven Rag”, partially because it was kind of dry and partially because nothing of interest went on to put into it. I knew that to be different now. Interesting things did in fact go on around here but they just never made the proper news. I couldn’t help but wonder what Mr. Harper would think if he knew the truth about the real Ravencrest.

“So you run this place then?” I asked, meaning the dojo.

She nodded. “Took over when I turned eighteen. Dad wanted to keep it in the family I guess.”

I nodded. “So who’s Master Chang then?”

“Beats the hell out of me.”

She led me over to the boxing ring. We got there in time to see two fighters enter. Their heads were covered by protective gear so I couldn’t see their faces but one of them was wearing a Wile E. Coyote shirt. The other one was a girl, I could tell by her shape, of course. It surprised me a bit to see that actually. The guy was pretty well built, not overly ripped but built enough that it was clear who would be the victor in this fight. As soon as the fight started, I was surprised by a lot of things. The first being that they started kicking one another and the second, of course, was she was holding her own. She was fast, with real fancy footwork. The guy was fast too but she had grace and finesse, he was all power. They danced around one another for quite a while, delivering kick after kick. This went on for a while too, neither really making much of a dent on the others defenses.

Finally, Carly jumped into the ring and pulled them apart.

“Ok you two” she said, pushing them away. “Fight’s over, hit the showers.”

I heard the girl huff before she pulled off her head covering. The first thing I saw was a long braid of dark hair tumble out, dropping down the length of her back. When she turned to me, it was clear she was related to Carly. They had similar facial features, the same nose, the same green eyes. She looked at me for a long while, scrutinizing me intensely. Looking at her, I thought I saw something, something that didn’t quite fit her right. I gave her outfit a quick once over: yoga pants, tank top. She looked the part but she looked out of place too, a bit awkward maybe.

`”Your girlfriend is here,” she snorted at the guy before leaving the ring via the other side.

I watched her go, her braid swaying as she disappeared through a door.

That’s when the guy turned to me and pulled off his gear, surprising the hell out of me. “Hey Tracy” said Chris with the biggest smile. “Glad you could make it.”

Chris pulled off his gloves, handing them to his sister. Carly gave him a look then pinched her nose. “Bro, before you start drooling over her, you definitely need a shower.”

Chris gave her a gentle shove. I couldn’t help but blush. Yeah I blushed and it scared the hell out of me. I’d been trying to avoid thinking about guys but it was getting harder and harder. All this week they were all over me, thanks to the fricken pheromones. I was so busy my first day back that I didn’t notice but as soon as Tuesday had come around it was like I was the biggest side of beef in the world. It took only a day or so for the guys to forget about Mike and his previous nether region. None of them clamped a hand over their crotch when I walked by. Now it was all “Hey Tracy” and “How ya doing Tracy”.

Chris didn’t say anything else as he climbed out of the ring and followed braid girl through the far door. I watched him go, I couldn’t help it. At school, he seemed like such a bump but here there was just something so totally different about him. I’m sad and horrified to say that I was actually watching him a little more than I wanted to as he disappeared. I turned away quickly; Carly was smiling a little wickedly at me.

“What?” I asked, trying not to blush.

“Nothing” she said with a smile then added. “So have you given any thought to what kind of martial arts you might want to try?”

I hadn’t really but now that I thought about it, I really wanted to be like that girl up there.

“What were they doing?”

Carly smiled. “Good choice.”

----- OOO-----

“Between you and my brother” said Chris panting. “I think I’m going to retire.”

The two of us were sitting on a little bench bolted to the wall. We’d just spent the last two hours teaching me the finer points of kickboxing. I was a bit reluctant to try at first---even after watching him demonstrate more than a few times---but now I was getting the hang of it. It was a lot more complicated than I thought but after only a few go’s at it, I was learning fast. Too fast for my liking actually. It was like Math class all over again. Something that should have been impossible---that I knew was impossible---was suddenly much too easy. He only had to show me something once and I quickly mastered it, almost as if I’d been doing it my whole life.

After showing me the basics, we went right into it. Well not really into it but close. He put these things on his hands and had me kick at them again and again. It’s what he called his usual warm up. It was kind of tedious but I understand the reasoning. I think he was afraid that if I got right into the ring I might hurt myself. Though I took to the sport easily, there was still a lot that I didn’t know. He wanted to do things slowly and work me up to the ring.

He took a swig from his water bottle and handed it over. I took it without question, taking a nice long drink. When I was done, he gave me the strangest look.

“Something wrong?” I asked, tossing the bottle back.

He shook his head. “It’s strange but you’re not like I thought you were going to be.”

I laughed. “Is that good or bad?”

He smirked. “I didn’t mean to offend you. It’s just that girls that look like you, they don’t normally act the way you do.”

“What’s wrong with the way I look?”

“Nothing, you look great” He cursed, I found myself slightly blushing. “What I meant was, I honestly thought you were fucking with me. You came out of nowhere---on your first day no less---and signed right up. That usually doesn’t happen. The other guys in the club thought you were fucking with us actually.”

I nodded. “So that’s why I was the only one at Friday’s meeting?”

He sighed. “Sorry about that. They didn’t want to be there to see you burn us. To be honest I thought you were messing with me too. I never actually thought you were going to show, in fact I lost money on it.”

I frowned. “How much?”

He shrugged. “Ten bucks.”

I feigned insult. “I’m only worth a lousy ten bucks?”

He shook his head quickly. “Much more than that.”

I couldn’t help but smile. Why was I smiling, I shouldn’t be smiling? He was smiling too. Oh, God were we flirting? I’d never flirted before, especially with a guy. I didn’t talk to many girls before besides Mary but that was totally different. The first time I ever really talked to other girls was that day before my birthday. First, it was Britney then Clara. When Dana started talking to me at my party, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. But flirting, I wasn’t even sure how to flirt with a girl. Now on the other hand, I was certain I was some damn pro at it or something. Was there something wrong with me? I shouldn’t like it but I did. I wanted to feel sick to my stomach and it scared me that I didn’t.

Why wasn’t I sick? What the hell did that mean?

“You ok?’ asked Chris, I nodded. “You went a little quiet and looked like you were going to throw up. I didn’t work you too hard did I?”

I shook my head. “Just had a weird thought is all.”

Chris sighed. “Definitely not like other girls, that’s for sure.”

He kept saying that. It was starting to scare me. “I don’t get out much”

Chris laughed. Damn I’m doing it again.

“See right there” he said with a smile. “The way you act, the way you talk. Another girl would have been insulted by what I said. But you, you threw a joke right back at me.”

I pulled a stray lock of hair from my face, tucking it gently behind my ear.

We sat in silence after that. I looked him over, I mean really looked him over. I suppose he wasn’t too bad to look at if you liked that skater boy pseudo Emo look. He had features similar to Carly but his chin was a little more square and his nose not quite so small. I liked the way that his hair sort of fell over his one too, it made him look a bit like a slacker but it worked for his laid back attitude. Of course, there was none of that now. To look at the boy sitting next to me it was hard to peg him as the slacker boy from class. Sure, he still looked like Chris but he definitely didn’t act like him.

“Why are there two of you?” I asked, a second or two before I realized I actually said that aloud.

Shit, my stupid mouth today.

He looked at me oddly for a second. Then he smiled. “You must have seen my brother,” he said with a laugh. “We’re twins but nothing alike. I’m sure you’ve seen him around school, he usually has his nose in a book.”

I nodded. “That must be it then.”

“You’re a twin too, right?”

I’m a twin. No, I’m not, I don’t…oh right the stupid cover story. I nodded. “Yep, kind of a shock actually. My whole life I never even knew I had family here. Then Dad shows up out of the blue on my sixteenth birthday, dragged me here. What a way to spend Labor Day huh?”

“Labor Day, you were born on Labor Day?” I nodded. “That is the weirdest fricken thing in the world; Craig and I were born then too.”

“No kidding” I said, kind of shocked actually.

I had no idea that we really did have a lot in common.

We talked about how cool it was to have a Labor Day birthday, specifically the fact that we always got three days off. It was kind of weird to meet someone else with one though, I can’t even tell you the odds. I suppose it should have freaked me out a little bit more but I was just happy talking about it. I’d always felt a little strange about it actually, having my birthday fall on a holiday but one that most people wouldn’t care about. In school, all that Labor Day meant was a three-day weekend at the beginning of the year. I always wondered why they didn’t just start class afterwards but I guess the government had their reasons.

Our talk was interrupted by the arrival of Carly. She seemed to appear out of nowhere, smiling like usual. “You guys want to break for lunch?”

I looked at the clock on the wall and cursed. “It’s noon already?”

I jumped to my feet.

Chris jumped with me. “Is something wrong?”

“I’m supposed to meet my friends in an hour. I need to get home and get ready.”

Chris smiled. “Carly can drive you home if you need it?”

I shook my head. “I’m good, my cousin is only down the road.”

I looked at Chris and bit my lip. I knew I was going to regret it but what the hell. “You want to come to hang out with us? It’s sort of this group date thing but none of us really have dates except Greg. You’re welcome to hang if you want?”

Did I just ask him out?

Chris smiled. “That sounds cool. One o’clock right?”

I nodded. Then I grabbed my stuff and rushed off to the locker room, hoping that I’d get home in time to shower, change and make it to the theater.

----- OOO-----

I made it home in the nick of time as they say. Actually, I had about an hour or so, give or take a few minutes. I rushed through a shower and getting dressed. I wore something simple, my usual actually: jeans and t-shirt. Carson drove me out to the theater where Mary and Greg were already waiting. Mary had the sourest look ever and Greg was pacing like a nervous racehorse. They were a strange pair. Mary was all gothed out like usual and Greg was wearing his best shirt---which was a blue button down---and a pair of khaki pants. He was too overdressed for something as casual as a movie but he looked nice. I’m sure Rita would appreciate him all the more for it.

“You need me to pick you up?” asked Carson before I left the truck.

“Aren’t you supposed to pick me up? I thought the whole point of the bodyguard thing was to make sure I was never alone?”

He shrugged. “Well, I’m kind of busy tonight…got plans. If you don’t tell Dad…”

I smiled. “I’ll get a cab; make sure I go home with Mary and Greg.”

Carson smiled even bigger. “Thanks cuz, you’re the best.”

I jumped out of the truck. As soon as I was on the curb, he pulled away. Mary came walking over, leaving Greg to fuss about. She looked at the truck as it whipped around the corner, sighing. “So the knuckle dragger is still your escort, huh?”

I laughed. “He’s not so bad. His Dad is a little worried is all, I mean after you know what and all.”

She nodded.

“You Know What” was how we were referring to the deaths. After getting home, she was one of the first people I called. I thought maybe she might know a little more than Carson but Mary was completely in the dark. So I filled her in about the body, how the Thompsons were killed too and how I saw something. I didn’t even tell Carson about seeing the something. I was sure it was the gray and black wolf from before but I wasn’t totally certain. There was something about it though that freaked me out. It made me wonder if there were other things out there more deadly than us. I asked Mary about it but she was still kind of new at all of this. Like me, she’d only been introduced to the world recently---well within the last few months actually.

“Oooh, girl talk!”

Mary and I both turned around to see Rita come up the sidewalk. She was as happy and chipper as ever, dressed in a flower print dress. She was beaming like she’d just one the lottery, almost skipping when she came up to us. She gave me a quick hug, almost did the same for Mary---who gave her a “don’t you dare” look---then turned to Greg.

“Gregory, you look so handsome.”

Greg blushed. Rita walked over to him and gave him a quick peck on the cheek. Then looped her arm through his, giggling.

Mary groaned; after which I elbowed her. Greg needed his moment and I wasn’t going to let her ruin it.

A few moments later Dana arrived. I surprised to see she wasn’t alone. I looked from her to Clara Saunders and back. It still surprised me that she and Clara were friends. Though I suppose it made some sense, I think the two of them were on the Student Council together or something. Dana saw me looking and smiled, waving as she did so. She and Clara came over; Mary grumbled something under her breath that I didn’t quite make out.

“Hi, is it ok that I invited Clara?”

Mary was about to say something but I cut her off. “Sure, the more the merrier.”

Dana smiled. “Good. We were supposed to do homework together today and it completely slipped my mind. I dragged her along to make up for it.”

Clara smiled shyly at us. When she locked eyes with Mary, the color drained from her face. Mary had that affect on the weak minded.

“Any more surprise guests?” snapped my annoyed friend.

“One more” I said, surprising Mary.

She turned to me with a raised eyebrow. At that moment, Chris rode up on his bike. Like the rest of us he wasn’t mobile---I think Dana was the only one who actually had a car. Chris looked a bit out of place, hiding underneath the hood of a gray hoodie. He scanned all our faces, probably deciding to run or not. I couldn’t let that happen. I took a step forward, getting a raised eyebrow look from Mary. I ignored it as I approached him slowly.

“You’re not bailing are you?” I asked him as he still sat on his bike.

He looked at everyone and said softly. “Half these people hate me.”

“Then they need to get to know you” I said, feeling overly protective of him.

He sighed. “As long as you keep scary Malice away from me, I’m good.”

“Deal.”

I found myself grabbing his sleeve as he climbed off his bike, securing it with the lock around a parking meter. I dragged him over to the assembled, catching a few looks. Mary gave him an amused smile.

“We all here?” asked Dana, eying Chris as if he just crawled out of the sewer.

Chris gave her a disdainful look too.

“This is it, right Greg?” I asked, Greg looked at everyone and nodded.

WE filed toward the theater after that. Dana made a comment about going to work even on her day off which Clara and Rita laughed at. Chris fell in line behind Greg, leaving Mary and me in the back. She gave me a strange look, one she kept the whole way through the line. When we got inside, the others headed to the concession stand. Mary grabbed my arm and dragged me into the theater. We dropped into a pair of seats in the back.

“You and Chris Harper?”

“What about it?”

She smiled. “I saw the way you looked at him. You don’t like him do you?”

I shrugged. “I’m confused as all hell. I went to his family’s dojo today for some lessons, met his older sister. Chris was there kicking ass in this ring and something just clicked. My heart started to flutter a bit I think. It was strange and scary, I wanted to puke. We got to talking though; he’s a really cool guy. Then I sorta asked him here.”

“You asked out Ravencrest’s only skater boy?”

“I think so.”

Mary laughed. “Little Tracy Locke, growing up too fast for her own good.”

I stuck my tongue out at her.

The others started filing in after that. They decided it might be better to sit closer to the screen so Mary and I followed. We found some spots in the center row. The theater might have shown a lot of old stuff but every once and a while it got some new movies in too. I’m not sure what this one was though, some gory, overrated slasher flick I think. WE were the first ones there but the place quickly starter to fill up with other teenagers. I groaned when I saw Mike and his cronies file in right before the lights dimmed and the previews started. We locked eyes for a moment; Mike was staring daggers at me. He ran his finger across his throat, probably thinking that he was threatening me somehow.

“What a jackass” I said to Mary “as if the beating I gave him wasn’t enough.”

“He’ll get his,” said Mary with a wicked smile.

She didn’t say anymore after that.

The movie was kind of crap and as I looked around I noticed that a lot of teens assembled were there as couples. Most of those couples weren’t paying attention to the screen. I looked down the row at Greg and Rita, noticing them holding hands, her head lying on his shoulder. It was kind of sweet and yes, I just said that. This girl thing was starting to seep into my brain more and more.

“Popcorn?” asked Chris---who was sitting next to me.

I reached for the tub, grabbing a handful. “This movie is horrible,” I said.

On the screen, some big-breasted blonde was screaming, running from the black shrouded knife wielding psycho.

Chris laughed. “Its what sells these days.”

I reached for more popcorn but accidentally found his hand instead. Strangely enough, I didn’t move my hand. He didn’t try to move it either. We weren’t exactly holding hands but it was close. My hand ended up on top of his for the rest of the movie, the popcorn completely forgotten. I should have been weirded out by the whole thing but it was surprisingly comforting. That fluttering feeling came back. Shit, I liked guys.

The movie ended after eighty minutes---the best and worst of my life. As we slowly moved down the aisle, I found myself holding Chris’s hand. Things would have been perfect if someone didn’t slam into me. It was an accident of course but their shoulder slamming into mine from behind stung a bit. They apologized and pushed their way forward. I scoffed, watching as they moved through the line pretty quick. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who hated the movie.

When we got outside, I found myself slowly letting go of Chris’s hand. Greg and Rita were talking about getting something to eat. Dana and Clara had to bail though; they wanted to get an early start on homework. Chris had to go too, he had to help sweep the dojo. I found myself pecking him on the cheek and thanking him. He smiled real big after that before climbing on his bike and riding off.

“What about you two?” asked Rita.

Greg was giving us a look that said he wanted to be alone with her.

“Nah, too much mushy crap. I think I’ll head to Casa de Locke with Tracy.”

Greg smiled and said see ya then took Rita’s hand, the two of them walking toward our little bistro.

“So cute” I said with a laugh.

“You really are a girl now aren’t you?” said Mary with a laugh, which was meant with my elbow in her ribs.

“Now we just need to find you someone,” I said with my own laugh.

She stuck her tongue out at me. She took a playful swipe at me which I dodged. She tried a few more times to disastrous results. We had a good laugh about it. Then Mary stepped toward the curb to hail a cab. As she was doing that, I stuck my hands in my pockets. When I did, I found a surprise waiting for me. There was something in my left one. I pulled it out to find a small square black envelope. I opened it up slowly and looked at the black card inside. It had three words in fancy silver script: You’ve Been Summoned.

What the hell was this?

“Oh shit,” said Mary, snatching the card from my fingers.

“What? What is it?”

“It’s a summons from the Coven,” she said, the color draining from her face.

I cursed. It must have been when that person bumped into me.

This was the point in the movie where the eerie music started to play.

Blood?

So another chapter in the days of her life. (Bad Joke) But seriously folks, this story is shaping up nicely and has me hooked, and looking for it's updates and reading them as soon as they appear. Very nice job.

Draflow

Her being attracted to guys

... well *meh* that was to be expected, given what her role is in her pack as alpha female.

And she is beautiful as befitting an alpha which according to my research is among the reasons pack members like the alpha female so much.

Apparently she is special, beyond even other weres, but it will be interesting to find out what exactly it is that makes her special as so far all we've been given are merely signposts to the fact that she may be special ( intelligence, rapid martial arts ability, physical strength etc. )

Chris may or may not be a beau for her since she is a very rare werewolf female who should for the sake of her pack be mated with probably an alpha werewolf male to create a pure were child.

So far we do not know what kind of were Chris might be but we are getting hints that he might be a were coyote but that is just me.

Kim

The Pack

I'm sure the pack will NOT be happy with her dating anyone other than who they SAY she should date. Being a rare female werewolf and all...

Another thing she should probablly be careful of is Other were's. I have a feeling that females are rare for a reason, and that would be something like the old wolves pissed off the rest of the community so they were being made extinct through lack of women. That's my guess.

Errmm...

With all due respect, I think you're putting way too much emphasis on the idea of an "Alpha Female".

First off, this is fiction. EoF isn't likely to be handing Tracy any automatic power or control over her situation. Tracy having an easy ride makes for a dull story. Tracy having to struggle for control of her own life and situation and NOT having everything handed to her makes for a much more interesting story. Is Tracy special? Well, it sure looks that way, but that doesn't mean she's powerful. It looks much more to me like the Lockes view her as rare, valuable and fragile and that the other weres we've seen may also view her that way. Being the focal point of attention by lots of older, more powerful males who are busy jockeying for position and political control doesn't mean Tracy has much direct power or control herself. (Though she may have indirect control, provided she can figure out how the lines of power run, and can organized allies for herself).

Also, bear in mind that Tracy's family aren't wolves, they're werewolves. Their society may have some of the trappings of a wolf pack, but it's still primarily a human society, and is organized along human-style control lines.

In the wild, a wolf pack typically consists of a mated pair of wolves and their offspring. The alpha female is the alpha for two reasons, first because she's the mother of most of the rest of the pack. Second, because she's willing (and capable) of killing any pups that any other females might bear. Tracy isn't anyone's mother (yet). In wolf terms, she's still just a juvenile, who wouldn't have any control within the pack.

If Tracy were to break off and form her OWN pack, she'd definitely be the alpha female of that pack, but just being the only female doesn't give her any automatic rights or authority in the one she was born into. EoF has talked about the last female werewolf, and it sure didn't sound like she had any control over the clan, it sounded a lot more like she lived her life in a gilded cage.

kimmie's picture

Well maybe not a gilded cage per se

but more like a mafia family where you do not discuss family business in front of the women and children though obviously Constance knew what was going on. In the case of Trevor well he had to be introduced to the family business as they all knew what was going to happen.

I am using the alpha female as a rough analogy of course as like you said EoF made it clear that it is not totally like a Wolf pack but he made no in-depth explanation as to the differences between fictional wolf packs and the real mccoy. On that note, my viewpoint that she may very well be alpha cannot necessarily be excluded either.

We will just have to see how it all plays out. In any case, if Tracy turns out to be an Alpha female, who is to say she can't take over the clan from good ol' dad if the rules for werewolf pack behavior has not been defined yet? Maybe the death of were females may be due to her attempts to take over the pack?

*Shrug*

Anybody's guess is as good as any at this point.

Chris

He'll be here and there. You might be reading more things with the Harpers soon :)

Maggie_Finson's picture

Tracy does seem to just get

in deeper and deeper, doesn't she? Getting a little more girly each day, attracted to boys now, and on top of everything else a summons to appear before the Coven. Nice chapter.

And about those Harper people...

More in Singing to the Moon, if anyone's interested.

Maggie

I love-

the pacing. Adjusting to her new circumstances inter-spaced with the mystery that is Ravencrest, is very nice and interesting. It has something for everyone. Heck, I'm wondering if there really was a twin in sense, like chimera or one that didn't survive childbirth. That would kinda explain the she-wolf thing. I suppose we'll find out more in the next chapters. Cool stuff!

Tracy's Change

There will be a semi-explanation for it in this story but I think I'm going to drag it out a bit, possibly bring up more about it in another story.

I like it!

I like how the suspence just keeps building in this story. It seems like poor young tracy has a lot on her plate at the moment: With the Coven summoning her and this thing with Chris... So many places it could go from here. Please keep it up!

The Summons

I envision the Coven as a kind of court---which people will see shortly. So calling it a summons actually works really well.

Just had a silly thought.

The Peoples Coven, with Grumpy Judge Wapner, Ware of Wares :)

(For those who didn't know, Judge Wapner, was the orignal judge of the Peoples Court)

Mark

Nice update.

This story is getting really good. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Kalkin62's picture

Hmm...

Hmmm...

All the people in Chris' family have names that begin with "C" and one of them was wearing a Wile E. Coyote t-shirt ... hmmm ...

Have we just met the Coyote were-clan? That comment Carly makes about having a family patriarch is suspicious. Although, to be fair, she could have just meant "rich old man who controls all the money".

And ... what's with that girl that Tracy thought looked oddly out of place? Is Tracy not the only were-boy who turned into a were-girl on her 16th birthday? Or ... is there something else going on? There are other supernatural beings in this town after all. And ... I suppose it's possible that female were-pheromones might have the effect of pissing other females off too. Still .... we never do learn her name, do we. And "Craig" is strangely absent.

And ... how big exactly is this town supposed to be? My recollection (from whichever earlier chapter discussed the town's population) was that the town was fairly small, 1500 people maybe? There seem to be an awful lot of people, business, etc. around for something that small. If the town is really THAT small, we should have already met just about everyone in Tracy's whole high school, from all four grades.

I like that Tracy's personal clothing style is remaining "casual" and "uni-sex".

I'd also like to see where this thing with Chris goes. I loved the bit where she asks herself: "Did I just ask him out?" Yes Tracy, yes you did. That whole interaction was hilarious.

And ... Carson (one of the only Locke's without a "T" name) is busy tonight, do I sense an upcoming opportunity for hostiles to physically attack Tracy?

Looking forward to more!

Enemyoffun's picture

The Town

Its about 2500 people not including the college students. The college adds another 2000 or so to the mix. Its not very big but a lot of small towns have a lot of things.

But that makes...

2500 population / average age of 75 = around 33 people the same age, i.e. , in the same year level. This means a low probability of more than one class running at a time in high school, unless (given it's a college town) they run boarders at the school as well?

Great story!

Kalkin62's picture

Well... yeah

That's kind of my point. Given the apparent size of the high school and of the individual grades, it seems like there really ought to be more than 130 kids there.

It's not really that important, the town is "as big as it needs to be" for the story, but it just seems like a minor inconsistency.

Keep in mind that towns

Keep in mind that towns often don't count their population with children in mind. (some do, some don't). So, you could tack another 500 kids into that without really affecting much.

Maggie_Finson's picture

Please keep in mind,

That like most small towns a large portion of the local population isn't counted because they live outside the town limits. There are probably farms, and other things that while not in town, would add to the student population there.

Maggie

The high school I graduated

The high school I graduated from had a large percentage of the population come from over 15 miles away from the school - large rural population.

Enemyoffun's picture

My Town

In some of the rural areas where I live its so sparsely populated that a lot of kids actually go to a different school district even though they still technically live in my town. I guess they're actually closer to the other schools :)

info

I'm thinking she got the summons because she knows the disappearances are killings and seem to be related, and/or cause they are interested in meeting the she-wolf.Or none of the above, I look forward to more...

Summons

You did remember that the witches did blood and other work on Tracy, to try and find out what happened?

Obviously, they now have some of the answers, though possibly not all. And they don't like what they have found out.

Penny

A single witch, who is

A single witch, who is supposedly not part of the Coven, at least, according to Malice.

Nice work as usual...

...though for a minute there I thought you'd have had them watching Twilight (and hopefully hating it just as much).

:D

Twilight

I'm not a fan actually, I've seen the movies but I can't read the books...they're had to get through.

;=)

I loved the books but then got tired of them.

You sure know what makes a good cliffhanger

HOW COULD YOU DO THAT, NOW WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER I hope that I still have fingernail by the time the next chapter is up!!!
Good work EOF.

I wonder what this whole summoning business is about. It sounds rather ominous.

The coven

Tracy has been summened by the coven not sure if this is a good thing or not.

Tracy looks like has a boy friend & she is getting more & more girly by the minute.

I just wonder what the coven has planed for Tracy I wonder if they have an answer for her about how she became a she wolf. It will be interesting to find out.

Look foward to the next chapters love this story keep up the great work :)

Love Samantha Renee Heart

If the coven found out from

If the coven found out from Mary's grandmother, Mary's going to be PISSED. Considering that she promised Tracy that they wouldn't find out through her.

Don't get locked into the idea that the Coven is any all-powerful group. They can't be. If they were, there likely wouldn't be _any_ other ghosties, ghoulies, and things that gae bump in the night. Especially since Wisteria apparently likes magic users for snacks.

Look at the vampires. We're looking at, what, 65 of them? Another, say, 180 weres of various stripes? That's around 10% of the permanent population - with the ability to have an impact vastly out of proportion to those numbers.

The witches (magic users) are apparently just better at hiding. If they became a threat to the supernatural inhabitants as a whole, I'd guarantee they wouldn't exist long - the weres, vampires, and the rest would gang up and wipe them put. Vice versa, as well. I'd venture a guess that the original Locke and Carmilla were probably very closely matched, power-wise. Otherwise, there wouldn't have been any need for a treaty/agreement.

Maggie_Finson's picture

On Vampires.

Actually their numbers are strictly controlled as per the original pact Carmilla and Theodore Locke hammered out.

At any one time there are only twenty 'sisters' in addition to the original three. Unlike Wisteria, Carmilla and Josephine, the younger ones can and do leave Ravencrest after a time. Usually.

Maggie

Ah. I was counting it as

Ah. I was counting it as being either 10 or 20 _per_ original vampire, giving either 33 or 63 vampires (any more than that would probably be a large sorority)

So, estimate about 4-8 vamps a year move on to other cities, and that explains the conversions at the beginning of the year.

BW

Actually, I could see the

Actually, I could see the were council having some nasty things to say about Tracy's father.

Females are apparently rare, and not only did he verbally abuse her, he basically denied paternity (he called her a 'thing') and removed the honor he'd just bestowed upon her. (the beta badge)

He then left her naked, in the snow. Definitely Alpha material, yup, yup.

Enemyoffun's picture

The Were Council

I haven't really developed it much atm but I do know that its sort of a gentleman's club so they probably won't have a problem with the way Tobias has been treating his new daughter.

Really? Despite the fact

Really? Despite the fact that he just pissed all over the _only_ female werewolf in the family, i.e. "future of his race"? Alpha is about the pack, not just 'me' :)

Loki's picture

Partially right there...

That's the way it is *supposed* to be, but haven't we already established that the Alpha is at least somewhat dysfunctional? Just because something is supposed to be a certain way, doesn't necessarily mean that it is. Just something to keep in mind here, as it seems like Tracy's father isn't adjusting to the loss of his second son very well at all.

That's my point - there's a good chance of him being bitched at by the other 'Alphas' over stupid behavior. It wouldn't necessarily go anywhere, but he won't get any brownie points :)

mittfh's picture

Tobias Locke

Never mind alpha of the clan, as he owns a considerable part of town and is probably the wealthiest person there, he probably regards himself as a kind of demi-god. We don't know who the mystery assassin is or if the executions and cover-ups have been on anyone's orders, but in at least one case the deaths proved advantageous to Tobias...

Personally I think the entire need-to-know basis of information on the clan and drip-feed of information is pretty controlling and not necessarily in the best interests of clan members. Perhaps Tracy's arrival can be the first gentle tap that contributes to getting the proverbial ball rolling towards reform of the clan's structure. Heck, it's even possible that eventually members of different clans can talk to each other in general about 'the change' - after all, there's bound to be a lot in common with all were clans (e.g. experiences of changing, changing tastes, acclimatisation, 'upgrades' etc.) that they could potentially share when not in the presence of non-weres without giving away any great clan secrets.

Developments Continue...

Interesting the newest female werewolf is starting to date. The other members of the family aren't going to like it very much, with Constance being an exception. The Coven wants to talk to her, that's just asking for trouble. What do those witches want, and I wonder if Malice's powers are beginning to improve...

Keep up the awesome work!

Werewolf Story

If someone would have told me I was going to be writing a werewolf story a few months ago I probably would have laughed. I'm not saying that I don't like these kinds of stories because I love them I just never thought I'd actually be writing one. I'm actually having a lot of fun with it though and I'm really glad you're liking it :)

Damn!

This is too damn good. So much for my intention of only reading one chapter tonight. This was my second chapter tonight, and now I'm moving on to the next one!

I can't stop!

I'm sitting home alone with things I have to do... I keep telling myself that I'll stop after THIS chapter... no, THIS chapter...
