Dani touched my forehead and smiled, "Your mind has been overloaded. Rest and let it heal naturally. Later on, Liz can help you to learn how to access your ability by healing any injury in your brain."

"You mean that that I burnt out my ability?"

"Pretty much. But it's already healing. It's more like you tripped a safety when you launched that final attack. But there is a good thing about this for when you are fully recovered."

"Oh? What's that?"

"Liz was able to see what your limits are."

"That's cool. Where's Daddy?"

"If you are speaking of Mister Renee Day, He is currently busy in the Mess Hall," she replied in a zombie like voice.

Then it dawned upon me that they had already instilled the story that my dad and I were not related. I glanced over to a blinking light and pressed the button next to it by the monitor screen.

"Miss Day. Please refrain from mentioning anything about your father being Renee Day," said Colonel Harris.

"Why?"

"For the other students to know that your father knows that you live will cause problems if it became known to the students."

"Is that why Dani is out of it?"

"Yes. When this intervention is over, she will awaken and head to the infirmary where Rita will correct her memory."

"What of Rita?"

"Unfortunately, she must remember everything in case she needs to repair another's memories."

Is there anything that I can do?"

"Ask where Renee Day is."

As his face went away, I saw Dani stirring, "Where's Renee Day?"

"In the Mess Hall, complaining that it's now a diner." she giggled.

"Mind if I go to the diner then?"

"Sure! Get dressed and we'll both go to lunch."

So I donned a pair of black pantyhose and a leotard with a dress made of a white blouse and black skirt that barely covered my leotard bottom with red Mary Jane's and we headed for the diner.

Dani's reaction and the Colonel's intervention brought home the sad fact that I was now an orphan. If Daddy was outside of the Center, then I could go and see him, just as the others could see their families. But they could ,.NEVER See them as family after the Change.

They looked nothing like their old selves, and even if they were accepted, the Syndicate would seek to control a student if they knew about my family. My plight was different in that Daddy knew about the new me, but we couldn't act as family, which was hell for me as I needed Daddy so bad.

Kris and others had paid me and Daddy a visit at his diner just before I changed into who I am, now. But the Syndicate also knew about me and tried to get me, too. Now Daddy was the chef here in the Center's diner while our waitress Shelly and her family were safe with other Center families under the protection of Homeland Security.

As I was pondering these thoughts, Luce came by, "I see that Dani got you out of bed, finally."

"I'll have you know that I am not a sluggard!"

"I didn't say that you were. You have been sleeping quite a bit."

"How long have I been asleep?"

"A week."

I looked at Dani, "A WEEK?"

"Yes. You were in a coma so deep that neither Liz, nor I could reach you. It took Sydney to reach you and pull you back to us."

"I didn't know that I'd gone that deep."

She smiled at me, "Sunny, if not for you, the Colonel would have had to send in soldiers without our gifts and destroy the zombie bodies and possibly sacrifice themselves to save us. You went beyond the Call of Duty."

"And feel like hell for it, too."

She guided me over to a table in the diner, "Kris and I both know how you feel. Both of us lost our innocence and have faced our demons."

"Just like I feel. How do you cope with the Loss?"

"With good friends and a resolve to not let anybody else suffer as you have."

"Does that really work?"

"Well, it helps if you have somebody who cares for you and somebody that you care for?"

"Like you and Heather and Kris and Liz?"

She smiled, "Yes. Caring for Heather helps to relieve a lot of the burden of Command and what I've done to help Heather."

"But if not for you, she'd not be here! Without you, she'd have gone rogue!"

"Yes, but what I had to do to save her was almost too much for me. I chose to stay because of her, and since then, I have found that I am stronger than I thought that I was."

"No doubt thanks to your boyfriend."

She blushed, "Wait till you have one and see just how wonderful they can be."

"Not bloody likely," I sighed.

Dani caressed my forehead, "Why not, Sunny? You are a pretty girl."

"If I have any children, they might inherit my power. A child with my power would be more dangerous than a dominator."

Luce looked at me with sympathy in her eyes, "We don't know if we can reproduce, nor if any children will inherit our gift. And if both parents are Emerged, the possibility of inheriting both gifts must be looked into. Basically, it's a wait and see, except that we Emerged know what to expect."

"So, you two WANT to have children"

"I know that I'd be a good mother. And with my gifts, I know how my children will be," said a tearful Dani.

"Why the tears?"

"I have yet to find the father of my children," she sighed.

Luce hugged her, "As for me, with my power, I can change anything about my children, and if any child becomes a danger, I can shift the child into a safe bunker."

"Then you think that with my gift that I can be a mother without worrying about my kids causing trouble?"

Dani laughed, "We didn't say that. What we are saying is that as their mother, you will have a link to them while you're pregnant that'll let you speak to your child. But once born, will be just like any child but with a tantrum with a kick."

I guess that being a mother isn't as tough as I thought that it'd be, but I still have a question, "Then I take it that the Center is ready for when any of us Emerged have children?"

Luce looked at me with smiling eyes, "You now want to be a mother?"

"Yes. I've always wanted to be a girl and now that I am one, that dream has come true. But even before, I never had a boyfriend when I was in girl mode. And now that I am a girl, what boy would want a red headed Asian girl like me?"

"Oh, I don't know. But if you ask me, wearing your girl clothes from before should get you noticed," offered Dani.

"You mean that my wardrobe is here?"

I saw an older woman approach me wearing a gray skirt suit with matching hose, "Miss Day, glad that I caught you before you had lunch."

"Who are you?"

"My apologies. I am Security Chief Miss Fine. I have a few documents for you to sign before we can release your belongings to you and make you an official member here at the Center."

"Why are you doing this for her and not for the rest of us?" huffed Luce.

"Because she is the first one of you who's belongings still fit her. She has quite an extensive wardrobe of girl's school uniforms as well as cheerleader, dance, majorette and flag corps as well as those for girl's gym and sports."

Dani looked at me and giggled, "I want to see you in those outfits. And once you start prancing around in them, you will find the boys more than willing to chat you up."

"Chat me up?"

"Yes, get ready to become very popular with the boys as they try to get your e-mail address."

"Surely they'd have no time with all of the studies and training that must be done."

Luce placed a hand on mine, "We do have some schooling so that we can earn a G.E.D. and then continue in our chosen studies in the morning with Center training after lunch. So we actually have the evening free unless we are sent out on retrievals. Then our studies and training are put on hold," she explained.

"What about the weekends?"

"Saturday is a free day, unless we need to make up for any lost training time. But Sunday is a rest day when we may attend church."

"There's a chapel in the Center?"

"Yes. It's where we hold assembly if needed. But it's mostly used as a gym for those who are doing weight training, gymnastics or any team sport, minus baseball and football."

"Are those sports allowed?"

"Yes, there is a warehouse that we use for a baseball and football stadium or will when we have enough students and staff."

"Well, when you do, sign me up as a cheerleader."

"Me too," giggled Dani.

Luce looked at her chronometer, "It's nearly lunchtime. Are you heading to lunch?"

"I am, I'm starving," said Dani.

I knew that she is trying to help me to get to know everybody. Can’t blame her for that. "Me too! I've heard about this new chef and want to meet him." Must keep up the story that Daddy and I are strangers. I know that he'll do his part, but I still want to meet with him in private.
