The Champions

Another musical interlude.....

Halftime was over and we were down by 10. I gave a quick shout out to Karla who relayed it to Geoff. I had a hard time getting the guys to wait, but when they heard the opening strains of the song I’d asked for, they changed somehow. A batch of somewhat dispirited football players turned into a team of… Geee, I don’t know, but definitely something predatory and very nasty. They were stomping in unison and charged onto the field as the bleachers shook beneath the crowd.

Buddy you're a boy make a big noise
Playin' in the street gonna be a big man some day
You got mud on yo' face
You big disgrace
Kickin' your can all over the place

Singin'

We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you

Buddy you're a young man hard man
Shoutin' in the street gonna take on the world some day
You got blood on yo' face
You big disgrace
Wavin' your banner all over the place

We will we will rock you

Singin'

We will we will rock you

Buddy you're an old man poor man
Pleadin' with your eyes gonna make you some peace some
day
You got mud on your face
You big disgrace
Somebody better put you back into your place

We will we will rock you

Singin'

We will we will rock you

Singin'

We will we will rock you

We will we will rock you

We will we will rock you

The championship game. The final seconds. Everything on my shoulders. I knew my teammates had complete faith in me and my ability. We would win or lose based on my foot.

The snap! Men mauling each other in front of me and my love taking out a linebacker twice his size to give me that extra quarter second, enough time to get the kick off cleanly just before I got knocked completely sideways and watched the ball as it flew through the air, knowing I’d just taken at least a broken rib and wondering if it had been worth it…

Then he was ripping my helmet off and kissing me wildly and the entire crowd was beyond insane! The music played and he hugged me and our teammates danced around both of us and mashed us all together and then they picked me up and carried me off the field while the music became audible over the crowd…

I've paid my dues -
Time after time -
I've done my sentence
But committed no crime -
And bad mistakes
I've made a few
I've had my share of sand kicked in my face -
But I've come through

We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting - till the end -
We are the champions -
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions - of the world -

I've taken my bows
And my curtain calls -
You brought me fame and fortune and everything that goes with it
-
I thank you all -

But it's been no bed of roses
No pleasure cruise -
I consider it a challenge before the whole human race -
And I ain't gonna lose -

We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting - till the end -
We are the champions -
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions - of the world -

I was so happy it took me a few moments to realize I had this sick pain in my chest and I couldn’t feel my foot…

A very sweet story with a very big question to answer, in the end. Leaves you wanting more.

Ahhh, Queen!

Nicely told, Theide, and the use of the lyrics fit perfectly. I voted. Thought you'd like to know.

I love it dear, and to be more specific...I love it
from a precious dear heart called Theide!

Thank you!

Great shortie, Theide. Very appropriate music for a football game.

I've seen the musical twice now. It's great fun and by the end of each performance the audience was on its feet singing along to both of those songs,

Copyright?

I love Queen's music, and I like what you've done here.

Now to be a bit of a wet blanket.
There was an earlier blog post where we discussed song parodies, and concluded that they are generally acceptable under copyright law (at least in the USA). This, however, is not a parody, it's simply a straight copy (so far as I can tell) of the song lyrics. It also goes beyond what the "fair use doctrine" would allow, such as quoting portions of a copyrighted work as part of a review or critique.

As I said before, IANAL. My advice is worth exactly what you paid for it. (Which I'm quite certain was nothing!) I'm also addressing this from a US perspective.
Again, I'm sorry if I'm the bearer of bad tidings.

I've Never Understood...

...how the lyrics to "We Will Rock You" could inspire anyone. The beat, sure. The psychological lift from fans stomping in unison and singing the chorus in your team's support, okay.

But depending on one's interpretation of "rock", the verses are either an extended putdown of the opposition, with a refrain emphasizing that we'll bully them because we can, or an expression of sympathy for downtrodden schlemiels with good intentions, who despite having disgraced us fans to the point where you'd think we'd want to abandon them, will instead be carried to success at the finish by our rocking support.

Apparently the second, more or less, was author Brian May's intention, according to an article in the current ESPN the Magazine declaring the song "America's #1 Stadium Anthem". I'll admit that I hadn't even considered it until I read that. But "mud on your face/a big disgrace" really isn't a role I'd want to take on if I were playing.

First things first!

Can someone please tell me if I should me making some sort of disclaimer here? I think it is beyond clear that the music used in this story cycle is that of the artists and I claim no creative license to it, to the extent that I am using it completely unaltered and on the YouTube links obviously attributed to the artists(One of whom is dead. RIP Freddy). Yes, I am incorporating it into a creative work and in fact using these songs as a major part of said creative work. Does anyone have any applicable expertise here that would be willing to advise me?

I'm using works from major artists here and I totally don't want to get any of them mad at me. Should I ask permisssion, disclaimer? What?

Second things?

As I've said, IANAL, so my comments are not in any way authoritative.

You could add a credit, typically something like:

It will make you feel better. I'm not sure that it will make any legal difference.

Asking for permission will probably be an exercise in futility. Those requests generally don't go to anyone with any artistic sensibilities. They do go to business managers and lawyers, who will likely say no unless money is going to change hands.

I doubt that anyone will get into any real trouble over this. At worst, BCTS might get a letter from the lawyers sternly pointing out that this infringes on their client's copyright, and demanding that the offending work be taken down immediately and that BCTS agree to sin no more. If they are real sharks they might demand that BCTS reveal your identity and require a similar mea culpa and pledge from you. (But I doubt that it would go that far.)

Sometimes all it takes is a little

push in the right direction, and anything becomes possible. This a sweet story without being overly bland. Thanx for sharing.
