On the day that Durham won the County Cricket championship for the third time in six years - stealing it from under the noses of Yorkshire! - let's hear it for the Land of the Prince Bishops and arguably its most gifted son. Yes, the songwriting genius Paddy McAloon has a new Prefab Sprout album out on October 7th. I've heard it all and it's the best thing he's recorded since 'Jordan: The Comeback'.

Let's Put That Right Then

Prefab Sprout are from Witton Gilbert - pronounced with a soft 'g' - 3 miles north west of Durham. Their first album 'Swoon' was released in 1984. They had several top 40 singles in the UK, including 'When Love Breaks Down', 'The King Of Rock And Roll' and 'The Sound Of Crying'. Almost all the material the band produced was written by vocalist and guitarist Paddy McAloon.

This is probably the most commercial track they ever recorded. It's an affectionate dig at Bruce Springsteen, from the 1987 album 'From Langley Park to Memphis'. Langley Park is a former mining village a few miles from Durham.

I daresay I'll have my "crown jewels" removed someday, not to ever be put back again. = )
