As above, Washington State senate has passes a same sex marriage bill, only a few years after passing a Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Now the new bill moves to the House where it is supposed to have enough votes to pass, and thence to the Governor who has said she will sign it into law. Opponents have claimed they will gather the needed signature to get a referendum on the Nov. Ballot to prevent the law from going into effect. They need a bit over 120,000 signatures, so could happen. For more, go to link.

A gain? I'm glad for the news, but
...as your blog makes plain, only a short while ago, the same state withheld the same rights they ostensibly now bestow. The sad part of this transcends states and nations, since the rights of human beings are held hostage by the capricious whims of those in the majority or those in power. As the old definition succinctly explains, democracy is two foxes and a chicken deciding what to have for dinner! Why we hold these truths to be SELF-EVIDENT...that all men (as in humans, not gender) are created equal and are endowed with such (not exclusive or limited to) inalienable rights as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Only when hearts and minds change will legislative bodies, fickle executives, and an inconsistent judiciary lose their ability to revoke that which is sacred and god-given! Thanks for the information!

Politicians are fickle
Unless the composition of the Senate has changed significantly since DOMA, this only serves as further evidence of how fickle politicians are. Unfortunately too many are sheep and will do whatever the party machine tells them to do, regardless of any arguments / evidence / personal beliefs / constituency beliefs. If that means saying one thing one year and the exact opposite the next, they will do (particularly if the media are staunch supporters of their party so unlikely to draw attention to the apparent U turns).
