Actually...

Our forebears drained the valley ages ago and the only thing that says we're a swamp are the "lakes" that form everywhere despite some of the best sewers in the country.

Did you know that Lake Erie used to be deeper than it is now? The thick layer of silt is in consequence of all the run-off from all our farm irrigation and creeks and floodplains. All so that humans could live in a northern swampland without leaving it a swampland.
