Stories I'll Never Write: 1 in a Series?

I ran across a phrase today I had never heard and it inspired a story idea. It's just that I don't think I'm the right person to write this story and besides, I already have too many things to do and write now. So, I thought I would just throw it out here and see if anyone wanted to do something with it.

A man and his wife, or perhaps a boy and his sister, or even a pair of male friends, get into an argument about who has the better fashion sense. Things escalate through insults to argument to challenge and then its,

"Handbags at Dawn"

That's the phrase I read this morning and it struck me as a story seed. :)

Perhaps one meeting is not decisive and the confrontation must be repeated -- at least three times? What's the madcap finish? Someone gets a sex change as a topper? Maybe an O.Henry ending? Are there spectators? Third parties like girlfriends or mothers? Magic or SF involved?

It could be pretty funny but I don't think I could do it justice, so there it is and someone else might have entirely different ideas on how to develop it, if anyone wants to. Or maybe this will just be a good thread with goofy comments. :)

Hugs,
Erin

Hm... that might be funny as

Hm... that might be funny as a sf story. Guy is annoyed by his wifes fashion sense. She challenges him to a style duel, he realises he likes dressing up as a girl and she'S sick of it. Since it is a sf story, they both get a sex change and live happily ever after :D
Ok kind of lame and I'm neither an avid romance reader nor writer ;)

But honestly, this is either a crossdressing story, or it cries for a dual sex change.

You have it all wrong!

My so understanding spouse often complains I have better fashion sense than she. It REALLY annoys her sometimes. Besides most guys don't care. T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers, and they're ready for the day. If they're picky, the tee has a saying that sums up their mood for the day.

However for a woman to be seen lacking in that critical area? That's fighting words! LOL

Passing on the Challenge

I am afraid if I took on the challenge, it would end with terrible carnage and copious amounts of bloodshed by all parties concerned. Either that or I'd find someway of turning this into another Gothic horror, a fate I do not believe most of you could deal with.

So I think it would be best of I passed.

Amused person writes...

I am reminded of Mary Gentle's hilarious book "Grunts", in which, IIRC, a T55 main battle tank is called to a trial as a character witness...can't think why, Nancy!

It's not an uncommon British phrase

Angharad's picture

usually referring to two arguing women, and in a jocular sense. When a wife or girlfriend refers to an argument with another woman which got quite heated, or left them feeling angry or unhappy, the husband might reasingly say, "Oh it's handbags at dawn, then is it?" as in an old fashioned duel.

Being handbagged, is being verbally or otherwise dressed down by a woman, and usually refers to a man. Maggie Thatcher was renowned for handbagging her cabinet ministers if they didn't do what she wanted.

Possibility

I believe it would be possible to use this as a springboard for a straight lesbian story. (No pun intended) A disagreement between a Lipstick Lesbian and a Boidyke, which refers to a boyish-looking lesbian. If Justin Bieber was female and lesbian, she would be a boidyke. Which probably wouldn't bother most of Bieber's fans at all! :) I have an outlet for lesbian fiction so who knows, I may write it and post it there. With your permission of course, Erin. It is your idea, after all.

Though Nick asked privately and may be using title first but anyone else is free to use the idea and post wherever they please. :) With or without acknowledgement, I just thought it was an hilarious phrase in our context.

Justin Bieber

doesn't have enough testosterone to be a boi. :)

Why does Handbags at dawn remind me of the end of the second Mariachi movie with Antonio Banderas' mates? :)

In my Opinion-

-there's no need to fight over who's going to use the title. Just make it another writer's challenge-like gig. That way everyone can put their own spin on it and not step on anyone else's toes or ego.

Fighting?

What fighting?

Don't do challenges, either.
