Field hockey, it's not just for girls anymore.

Apparently there is a boy playing on a girls field hockey and "dominating" it. While they haven't listed all his stats, he hardly seemed to be dominating.

Looking at the comments...

...well, the first fifty of over seven hundred(!), the majority of respondents are crying foul over Yahoo's bias and hypocrisy in the article. Apparently Yahoo's writers have celebrated when a girl has played on a boys team, because the school doesn't have a girls team for the sport - yet when the situation's reversed, they're all up in arms.

Personally, I believe it would be nice if at least some sports teams (and ideally all) could be selected purely on the skills and abilities of the players, regardless of their karyotype / gender / phenotype.

field hockey is just hockey, the ice version being the derived game, and it's played by men and women up to and including international level - I had a liberal studies lecturer who was captain of Wales, nice chap. It seems that planet US is different, yet again.

Indeed

I avoided hockey when..younger. It always struck me as being as violent as rugby, but with the addition of projectile weapons.

Rugby vs Hockey

"...as violent as rugby, but with the addition of projectile weapons"

And Steph (Something to Declare) wasn't a projectile weapon?

Rugby violent?

In the secondary school I went to during the '60s it was always considered that football (soccer) was much more violent than rugby and certainly produced more injuries. Hockey wasn't considered a problem since everyone was aware of the sticks and any attempt to use them other than as intended would be severely punished.

Needless to say, I managed a single game of rugby and football during my whole eight years there. I don't think I even touched the rugby ball during that one match, and I certainly didn't tackle anyone. Did one game of cricket, out for a duck. By the time we got round to hockey everyone knew I hated ball sports so never participated.

Would quite like to have popped over to the adjoining girls' school and joined in the netball games, though ;)

Of course

But then, the boys all wanted to join in the netball games, just for different reasons!

It's not just the US...

But, our northern neighbor, THIS time... (That refer to Ice Hockey as simply Hockey.)

Or, at least the Canadians I've known personally refer to it that way...

(It's important to note that over here - either sport can be called "Hockey" without the field/ice modifier... The speakers assume that everyone listening KNOWS which they're talking about from context.)

You're right that the field version of the game disappears eventually - here in the states. (I dunno about our northern neighbors.) Other, traditionally, female sports do as well. We're such an egalitarian society.

Can't save I've ever called

Can't save I've ever called field hockey just "hockey". But you're right about "ice" hockey. Let me tell you, as a Canadian it makes me cringe when people call it "ice hockey", it'll always be hockey to me.

My roommate in college was from Winnipeg and played Junior A. Do you know what I call "ice" hockey. "Silly".

Actually hockey is a great sport when it's free-wheeling end to end rushes. The brand of hockey played at the Olympics is hard to beat. The storyline at the Olympics was equally hard to beat. Great stuff.

Hockey, which seems to be the root of all evil when it comes to youth sports folly could be leading the way out of the insanity. Awarding league standing points for sportsmanship is a brilliant idea. I wonder how it works where the rubber hits the road? Or where the puck hits the ice?

When Are Girls . . . Girls

The boy is clearly dominating. Of the eight goals mentioned he scored six and assisted on another. I wonder if playing on this team has been fun and fulfilling for him? It hardly seems like he can really enjoy his success.

Girls' sports are interesting. Often girls' high school teams (ages 14-18) are "dominated" by seventh and eighth grade girls (ages 12 and 13). One of the reasons for this is that once girls start having hips and boobs they have a different center of gravity and lose quickness.

No one ever questions the fairness of these highly questionable "girls" playing those sports, except maybe in gymnastics where they've made certain rules to keep out the pre-pubescent.

I agree with the call for sports to include all. My daughter wanted to play football in the seventh grade. I agreed, even though she would have been the only girl in the league. We arranged with the league chair for her to take part. She decided against it at the last moment. She developed early and in the seventh grade she was already a woman. She struggled in high school, playing basketball and soccer against faster flat-chested foes. Perhaps if they want to make things "even" the sports officials should split the participants into teams based on bra cup size rather than gender. That would also allow the overweight males a more sporting competition.

By the way -- my daughter is now in her second year at college and is a dominant stopper (defensive back) for her college team. Once she got to the point of playing with other "real" woman she could readily compete.
