How Do You ...

Many times, when I try to vote on a story, a dialogue box opens that says, " An HTTP error 0 occured (sic). /topshelf/drupalit/count-vote/7441/1" and the 'vote/voted' box goes blank.

So how do you report this? Anybody know?

Yours from the Great White North,

drop out vote

I have noted this happen numerous times also. I think I have figured out it happens usually when I haved saved it off and then pulled it up from the save to read it and then try to do a vote it fails then. Might have to do with the connection to the net vs the memory.

Vote counter error

I'm pretty sure it's because your session expired. Without going into a tirade about HTTP protocol design, I'll just say that if you refresh your browser window you'll notice you are no longer logged in. After you log in again, you can immediately vote.

Note that your session typically gets logged out whenever the server restarts. I think that happens at 1AM PST.

If you want to completely avoid this problem, make sure you are logged in before you click on any story, and then vote immediately after reading it. I like to open all stories I want to read in separate tabs and if it takes me a few days to finish reading them all, I'll pay for it by getting the occasional session error. It doesn't bother me much, I re-log in, then vote.

Avoiding this problem by "designing it away" in the site code is hard, since there are conflicts between the desire to implement a voting box as "stateful" while using a "stateless" HTTP protocol, without compromising security. It's likely a 2-out-of-3 tradeoff where you can't have all three, and Erin and friends are not willing to trade out security.

This can happen at 5 and 35 after the hour because the server gets a minor reset at those times, if you happened to be voting just at that moment, the javascript doohickey running on your home machine would not be able to write to the server and would give an error.

Hugs,
Erin

Reciently, The Java updates have all been a pain. I can't get rid of JQS.exe
on my xp unit. Bugs me that I just can't kill that one, and I've used everyting
but bug spray!! Sometimes it's s timeout issue, and sometimes it just that Java
is basically an evil construct. Which, of course, makes it no better or worse than
most programs I suppose.

Also...

I occasionally get a note from someone that that Vote tile does not even appear
for some reason, when someone is logged in as a guest. I know that sometimes it's
because Erin has guest voting turned off, but it's happened with it on as well.
I assume they only look for it because of the note that I put on the bottom of my
stories 'empowering' readers. I voted for one person, but mostly I just tell them
that the nice note to the author is also pretty darned... nice.

I still run into people who don't want to vote because they think that the authors
will get something better than they deserve or something. Usually I just tell those
people... 'You can't even imagine...'

Vote Box

Sometimes the vote box does not show up if you are using IE. Works fine in Firefox.

Vote box & Firefox

I looked the other day using Firefox. When not logged in, the space at the bottom of the vote box that normally says "vote" says "login". And when signing in as a Guest Reader, the vote box was not there at all.
