If you are not "out" to

If you are not "out" to everyone, you will be if you are a participant in the parade. I was astounded at the number of people who STILL recognize me from that event a year ago!!

Assumptions

I've noticed that most "straights" seem to assume that anybody in a gay pride parade or event are GLB. This assumption is assisted by the media which invariably picks the most flamboyant participants to show in the footage. It also seems that the chosen spokesperson to be interviewed is a stereotype in appearance. Gotta love the media, don't ya?

There was a fuss up in Oklahoma a while back when a state legislator made a derogatory comment about gays being more a threat to the U.S. than terrorists, which she "clarified" to mean that the gay "agenda" was the threat. My brother sent a letter to his local paper, saying that yes, there IS a gay agenda, which is that the large majority of GLBT people simply want to be allowed to live their lives in peace, to marry, have children, buy a home, etc, just like any other NORMAL person. I was so proud of him! But needless to say, it wasn't printed.

An interesting point - put out in passing

on the news today about the NYC Gay Pride Parade. The New York Governor marched with them. He recently signed an executive order that New York will recognize same sex marriages performed in other states. And, the news stated that the Parade was for Gay, Lesbian, Bi and Trans. It was stated clearly and with NO emphasis...

EVERYONE

Everyone that marches in the Transgender section of the parade will probably get a few seconds of fame, or the San Francisco TransMarch prior to the parade.
I was happy to hear two friends of mine were on the TG contingent float in San Fran Pride 2008; Kate and Donna. Donna was a speaker the second half of this U-Tube at TransMarch 2008

My sister

... drove all the way to Boston one year to march in the Pride Parade, and she is not gay.

I forget her specific motive. It could have been contrariness.

Oh honey

I've been out for years now, and proud of it, I'm a transgender rights activist, and I always try to wear my transpride bracelet. People ask me why I'm so out, because apparently I have a really feminine body, but I love making it easier for those who aren't so "blessed" personally I think it's just a bunch of garbage, I mean who cares if a woman looks feminine or masculine anyway. Also I'm full time, just starting electrolysis, and I'm hoping soon to get the operation ^^

That's cool that you are and

That's cool that you are and that you are so actively involved. The people I was referring to who recognized me were straight and apparently normal or mundane or whatever, and were present in the very large crowd watching and cheering. I didn't say their recognition was bad, as they were there in support, not to jeer. Some were at the Memorial park this year to visit the booths and talk. And it's nice to have their support. I just didn't know them before the parade last year, but that sorta opened the door I guess.

Hadn't really thought about it

I wear my rainbow ribbon on my ID lanyard & have a rainbow bumper-sticker on my truck, but I've never thought about marching in a parade - strange, but seriously, the idea never occurred to me. Food for thought, I guess; I would, just not sure why I never thought of it. Weird.

Good For You My Princess

I wish that more people would make the stand that you are. If more of our leaders were to actively support the T.G. Community, then more people would be comfortable accepting of us.

No offense but,

I'm no one's princess at the moment, so I'd appreciate it if you didn't call me "your" princess any more, because I'm NOT your princess, I'm my OWN princess ^^

Huh?

Umm... when did I say I was actually in the parade? I said it's my first, meaning I went to it and watched the parade, you all are so silly xD

Pride Parade

I marched in the San Francisco parade in 1990 with a group that is no longer in existence. It so hard to describe how it feels to make a statement about true freedom of choice to live any way you want to.

Way Back

Melanie, you must have been with the ETVC group? I did not march in San Francisco till a few uears later I was dating the VP of ETVC. I was living in San Francisco and working in NYC so I got to march in NYC pride '94 up Broadway holding the front corner of the huge Rainbow Flag while pucshing a friend's wheelchair. I remember it was stinking hot and the only shade was to be under the flag. Marching up Broadway in NYC was a huge thrill but the gang in San Francisco was much more fun.

yay

Omg how Great:) i hope it went well. i wanna get me some help with stuff like that. im still in the very confused stage :( i need some hugs :(
