They just showed a remake of Dirty Dancing on television and I know some may disagree, but I loved it. I loved the original movie, of course, but there was so much family and social transition going on that fascinated me, besides the question, "Will Baby do the lift?" The new one offered much deeper and different characterizations, including a different ending. So ...

SPOILER ALERT! Do not read any further if you A) Haven't seen the 2017 version or B) Loved the final scene just as it was.

I understand that two former lovers, especially when their lives changed due to their meeting in 1963, would have an awkward reunion in 1975. But I felt that it was implied that Baby had settled for the domestic bliss her sister had wanted back in 1963. Young Baby had so much to offer the world, so much potential, and there was little indication of that girl in the woman. I also wanted to know about the others of that summer.

So, I woke up with this playing in my head and here it is, using most of the film's dialogue and my additions -- the Karin Bishop re-imagining of the final scene of Dirty Dancing.

The Broadway production of Dirty Dancing has finished; the theater is empty and finally, Baby stands up to leave. Johnny comes out from backstage.

JOHNNY:
Baby?

BABY:
[She turns around, recognizes Johnny and smiles]
Hi.

JOHNNY:
Hey.
[Johnny approaches Baby slowly, smiling. They hug as friends]
I saw you opening night but I couldn’t get to you. They didn’t tell me you were gonna be here today.

BABY:
[She looks around at the stage]
The show was amazing again, especially the choreography.

JOHNNY:
It was inspired by your book. It’s a great story, Frances.

BABY:
Thanks, Johnny.

JOHNNY:
[Chuckles, turns and looks at stage]
Never thought I’d have a career on Broadway.
[He looks back at her]
Until I met you. You made me feel like I could do anything.

BABY:
That summer … changed everything for me. I stopped being ‘the baby’.

JOHNNY:
It was just a name; you were never a baby. You were so fearless.

BABY:
You were, too. Standing up to my father like that ...
[Momentarily lost in the past]

JOHNNY:
[He recognizes her emotion, changes the subject]
Hey, I just got your sister’s new album. They’re singing better than ever.

BABY:
[She smiles]
I’ll tell Lisa you liked it. And Marco wrote most of this one, too.

JOHNNY:
And how are your folks?

BABY:
[Sighs]
Dad retired as head of the department. He passed away three years ago. Mom’s in Florida and loving it.

JOHNNY:
I’ll always be grateful to him, for what he did for Penny.

BABY:
I just saw that her third dance school’s opening.

JOHNNY:
Yeah, we keep in touch. Some of the old gang, anyway. Billy’s working cruise ships. I read that Neil, is, too, now that Kellerman’s is gone.

BABY:
[Teasing]
You read it?

JOHNNY:
[Sparring]
Yeah, I read it! You told me to get it checked out; dyslexia, just like you said. So … I got coaching.

BABY:
I’m so glad to hear it, Johnny.

JOHNNY:
[There is a pause, then awkwardly]
Sorry to hear about your father. So I guess there’s only one Dr. Houseman now, huh?

[Baby opens her mouth to answer, but is interrupted by a child’s voice]

ANNIE:
Mommy, Mommy!

BABY:
[She turns to face her daughter]
Hi, honey!

ANNIE:
We were waiting outside, but I’m hungry.

BABY:
[She hugs her daughter]
Okay, sweetie; we’ll leave in a minute. I have someone I want you to meet.
[Looks at Johnny]
This is Johnny Castle. He created all the dances for the show I just saw. Johnny, this is my daughter Annie.

ANNIE:
Pleased to meetcha. You’re a dancer?

JOHNNY:
Yes, ma’am.

ANNIE:
My mommy dances.

BABY:
Not really. I take a salsa class once a week at the JCC.

CHARLIE: [Off screen]
Sorry; she disappeared on me.
[He approaches Baby; they kiss, then he smiles at Johnny]
You must be Johnny Castle.

BABY:
This is my husband, Charlie.

[The two men shake hands]

CHARLIE:
We saw the show on opening night; it was fantastic.

JOHNNY:
Thanks.

BABY:
[In a family group, holding hands]
It was really great to see you again, Johnny.

JOHNNY:
You, too, Dr. Houseman.

BABY:
[She smiles]
It’s Dr. Wagner now.

CHARLIE:
[He nods to Johnny]
Very nice to meet you.

[Awkward pause]

CHARLIE:
We’ll wait outside. Come on, Annie. Thought you were hungry?

[Charlie and Annie turn and start to walk away; Baby lingers slightly and gives Johnny a last look]

BABY:
Take care of yourself, Johnny.
[She turns and walks to join her family.]

JOHNNY:
Sure.
[He watches the family head up the aisle and calls out]
Hey, Dr. Wagner?

[Both husband and wife turn around]

BABY & CHARLIE:
Yes?
[They chuckle; they’re used to this]

JOHNNY:
[Grins]
Keep on dancing.

BABY:
You too, Johnny.

[The family leaves]

Music swells: I’ve Had the Time of My Life

The camera pulls back and up, showing the stage set of Kellerman's Lodge.

Fade out.
