That big erotic banner

I've visited nifty.org recently and they have the same, or rather the same breastforms site banner as on bcts with one essential difference - you and everyone who looks at your monitor see the banner as below:

hifty_org banner

if you are interested you move the mouse over it and then you see this:

banner hover

Is it very complicated to have the same banner on BCTS site?

Probably not

We'll ask Eden, the art director at BCTS about it tomorrow. Thanks.

its usually not hard at all

when you setup a web page, the "buttons" you click on can have two different pictures, hence when buttons "highlight" when you go over them? its basically two picture, one that shows all the time, the other ONLY shows when made "active" by mousing over it

Done in JS

Yes, we have to get art from the advertiser and make changes to the page.

That's the only ad on the site that can't be turned off if you are logged in, so we may look into rewriting the code for that, too.

onmouseover attribute

As I recall (it's been a long time since I made Web pages), it's the onmouseover attribute in JavaScript.

Kind of creepy, actually

I realize those ads probably pay a big chunk of the bills at BCTS, but I have to say, the pictures they put in those ads make me so uncomfortable that they discourage me from considering buying their products. The products themselves (breast forms) aren't in and of themselves erotic, but they way they are presented, it seems like they think the only purpose for them is some kind of kinky sex fantasy.

As an M2F transsexual, I wouldn't mind having some sort of breast forms, mainly because the breasts my HRT have created don't even fill out an A-cup, and I would like to at least look like a normal woman (well, a normal ugly overweight old woman.) But I identify with women, and seeing a woman displayed as a sex toy for horny men doesn't turn me on, it just creeps me out. Do I want to discuss my body issues with a company that thinks of women that way? Or assumes that I see my people (women) that way?

I'm guessing I'm in the minority here, since an awful lot of authors here use stock images of so-called "sexy women" to illustrate their stories. But if there were an option to not have to see these images when browsing the home page, it would make me happy.

I'd call it off-puttung

However, unlike Asche, I enjoy pictures of sexy women and do sometimes use them in my stories.

But I think there's a big difference in using them in stories classed as being of an adult nature, and flaunting such extreme objects in the face of everyone who visits this site. I would like the home page to be office and home friendly. One can hardly claim one is visiting a website of works of fiction when an enormous pair of boobs are on the scren.

As a principle, I don't believe in turning off ads because this site needs every cent it can make. It would be interesting to see how click figures compare when less extreme and more realistic breast forms are displayed. Or maybe the advertiser has already done that calculation and realised that typical visitors to this site are very different from what many regulars believe!

Yeah, pretty much. But the ads TBFS runs here are nothing compared to the ones we turn down!

Please no...

Patricia Marie Allen's picture

Please no on the monkey porn. I'm preparing to come out to my granddaughter. I really want to emphasize that this isn't some kind of sex kink. I really don't even like stories that talk about the characters sex life, because every time I have to talk to someone about trans issues, I'm constantly faced with debunking the myth that trans is sexual in nature.

I blame the inclusion of T with the GLB to make up GLBT. It's the old kids question, "Which one doesn't belong?" G, L and B have to do with sexuality and T doesn't. (Besides, GLBT sounds like a railroad line... Great Lakes, Boston and Toledo, maybe?)

The Lack of a Tail

I'm sure Laika was talking about something completely different. Monkey porn is the pits whereby Ape porn sells.

Apes are not monkeys and monkeys are not apes. A primary difference is the existence of a tail.

Quick! Can you tell me one other situation within primates that is based on whether or not a tail exists?

Or maybe it's just in the midwest that we call a penis a "tail"?

I'd write a story about this, but I lack a tale about a tailless monkey.

What was your point? I've drifted.

The wrong way round

To my way of thinking, that is the kind of advert that should only be displayed once a user is logged in, not the other way around.

It does disturb me that I can spend time on BC but when I log out the screen is plastered with graphic images I wouldn't want to share with others. When I'm logged in, I accept that I could be served stuff like that, even if it doesn't interest me much. Once I log out, the implication is that the screen is more "public" and others could see such images.

If the mouseover trick can be applied, I suppose that could be a reasonable compromise but I'd rather they were only there once I log in. From Erin's point of view, that probably doesn't work, since I suspect many of our readers don't bother to get themselves a username and log in to read what's here. That means they don't have preferences to set. I don't know what the answer is.

Penny

That would encourage me...

...(and probably quite a few others) not to log in, which would be a shame, as people are less likely to fully participate in the site unless they are logged in.
