Horizon Zero Dawn

I am NOT a gamer on any media, though I have been watching some Youtube videos of Horizon Zero Dawn, #1 so far, and it is about the most visually appealing one I have seen. There is not a bunch of grunting guys and combat. :)

Last night I was looking at what it might cost to get setup, and the Ps4 is $400, a 48" TV is about $400 and the game is about $60. One of those goggle things is about $400. That is a lot for fritter ware. Would the goggle thing replace the TV?

Is it worth it getting into games or should I just go on a nice hike?

It depends what you want to do

You don't necessarily need the "goggle thing." (Assuming you're talking about PSVR?) The game in question can be played without it. And while the game would look better on the PS4 Pro, it will run just fine on the $250 PS4 slim. (Even comes in a bundle with Uncharted 4. So you'd get a game with it.) If you just want to enjoy the game, and don't feel like being a "gamer," there are cheaper options. Even a cheaper 1080p TV is perfectly capable.

I haven't gotten around to Horizon yet. Was going to wait til the price dropped a little. Just got Mass Effect Andromeda, and having fun playing that as the female twin in the story. (My girlfriend is enjoying my... interesting choices so far.)

Long story short, though, you can easily enjoy Horizon: Zero Dawn for about half the price you mentioned. ;)

PS: If you do go with the PS4 Pro and 4K TV setup, make sure you get a compatible TV. Lots of people are having a hell of a time getting the Pro to work with certain TV brands/models.

you can do this?

If you want that VR headset--you can lose the TV---because it replaces it!

But I might still do the TV in a 43 inch and that will be about 300 or so?
And for the game -buy used at 1/2 off or better i never buy new anymore or on release date!
you can pick up a used PS4 too? but not my call---I like new for electronics

I wait a year at least for any game so I get a package deal from the maker with all the downloadable content --(that they leave off the day one sold games ON PURPOSE to make more$$$) you get a year old game with all that in it as a 'greatest hits' or platinum or what ever fancy name they give to 2nd edition games.

ask me anything I go to the huge game events for the industry only for years --was there for day one sony PS1 and X-box and so on?

Questions and Answers

Get a basic PS4 rather than a pro, and settle for whatever HDTV you already have: the PS4 Pro outputs UPSCALED 4K, not native 4K, so it's really just a pixel-correct 1080p or less image. If all you want is a couple of games, then it's not worth the extra investment.

And skip PSVR unless you already know you like/can handle VR. F'rinstance, as interesting as the tech is, I can't really get into VR because every time I've tried it, or even just 3D televisions/movies, it's given me a raging headache, not to mention messed with my epilepsy.

All in all, you could be in for closer to 300 or even less: get a used PS4 (FROM A REPUTABLE SELLER,) and get the game. Most importantly, don't get frustrated or upset if it takes you a little time to master either: most games nowadays ignore the concept of a learning curve on the expectation you already know how to handle the controller, and for newcomers it can be daunting to get used to.

Lastly, do the hike too! A little exercise never goes amiss!

Yes and no

Actually the PS4 Pro can indeed output native 4K. It's quite obvious when you watch 4K programming on one. The problem is that most games are older, and Sony isn't pushing developers to make games in native 4K. They instead set the bar at 2K and upscale the games to 4K (or close to 4K) resolution. So the chances of ever actually having a native 4K game running at all times in native 4K are very slim.

That being said, I would have to agree that the Pro is not as special as Sony would like the consumer to believe. Seeing as how most games will continue to be made mostly in 2K for the foreseeable future, the Pro is not the best investment. Especially if 4K gaming is not something the buyer is wholeheartedly wanting to achieve.

The game in question, I believe, was not even rendered in 4K. So the PS4 Pro would make it look a little better on a 4K TV, but it would still look good on 1080p and a normal PS4 (or slim).

Basically PS4 Pro is a nice little bonus investment if you already have a 4K TV, and no PS4. I would tend to agree on the used route, if it's not something you plan on using a lot.
