In the immortal word of comic strip character Cathy: ACK!

:-o

Tech woes (bad disc controller scrambling my hard drive) are making my life the nightmare I can't wake up from. Every fix I try just makes things worse. sigh.
1] I am not dead,
2] I have not stopped writing 'Secondhand Life' or 'Summer of Love' (even though everything I have written is on a seemingly unrecoverable drive).
If it's any consolation - it not just destroyed my manuscripts, it also nuked my tax returns. :-(
Thank the universe for BCTS. I am actually pulling down what I've already posted to rebuild the story on my own desktop and will try to recreate what I had written but not yet posted from memory. (sigh)
It may still be a while. My current state of mind is just to finish the whole darned thing offline and post the rest in a massive upload so that there's no room for Murphy's law to intervene.
Although I reserve the right to change my mind if something just seems too juicy and my self restraint falters. :-P
If you've given up on the stories, I understand. I would have done the same. But I am determined to finish these one way or another, even if no one cares. I knew going in where the characters would end up - even if all the steps in between were as much of a surprise to me as any other reader. (Thank you muse) I am determined to "take them home".
I will not leave my characters - or any tenacious readers - stranded.
That said, maybe it would be best to wait for me to post the final chapter before investing in either story again. Every time I smugly think I'm riding the tiger, I find the tiger is riding me. :-(

Thank You For The Update

I'm sorry to hear about your computer difficulties. I was wondering about your stories the other day. I'm pleased that you are still here and planning to complete your stories.

Thank you for taking the time

Thank you for taking the time to update us. It's a completely understandable delay and honestly you didn't need to tell us anything.

Take all the time you need to clear your head and calm yourself. Your stories can wait, your health, well being, and mental state matter more than anything. We will be happy when you finally have the chance to continue the stories, so please take all the time you need.

I'm told STFU more times in a day than most people get told in a lifetime

It seems that you have been hit by the old law

That says that the best time to take a backup is one second before your Hard Disk goes Phut.
Even if you just copy the contents of your Documents Folder to a USB Stick you won't have this issue again.
Good luck with your efforts to get going again.

What can go wrong will...

story and computer troubles.

I hope you get to finish the stories. I do enjoy them.
That said, I might make a mention of a thing or two re: the computer.
I do not know what kind of computer you use , or tech level, or financial situation so, if this is irrelevant feel free to ignore this.
First, I saw a USB3 external SATA drive enclosure with PS on sale for $13 bucks at newegg today. ( I am considering one myself ) You might be able to access your drive on another computer that way.
Also if you have Windows doing its usual BSOD, you might try a Linux "live disk." They load into and run from RAM. If you can get and burn copy, you might try Puppy or Knoppix. ( Wary Puppy 5 would be about 200 meg Knoppix is much larger) There are BART live Windows XP disks, but they are extremely cumbersome.
The point is that if you can load a live os and if you can see your hd among the devices, you might be able to recover some data.

I will not normally put up ad links, but will this time. These are re: the enclosure. ( I have not tried these enclosures)

Patricia Marie Allen's picture

I had a story, one that I thought was progressing rather well, about two thirds finished and it slipped off into cyberspace never to be seen again. (That was three computers ago.) I've tried at least four time to recreate it and I just can't seem to get it to flow. :o(

Hugs
Patricia
