I've just woken up in the UK to hear all over the news that David Bowie has died of cancer at the age of 69.
Bowie has been a hero to me.
I just thought some of you would want to know.

Comments

He just released his latest album - 'Blackstar'

Apparently, it was selling well before his demise.
I actually met him, many years ago, in a restaurant. I was with my mother and he with his.
He could not have been nicer. I refused his offer to pay for our meal after our two tables had been pushed together.

Sorry, David, your battle with the big C was ultimately unsuccessful - you were immense.

So sad to hear this news

There will be very many comments from singers and celebrities on twitter, all saying he was a great influence in their lives.

However, having spoken to several of my TS friends who were at school in the seventies, he also gave them the courage to go on.If David as Ziggy Stardust could be different and succeed then perhaps so could they. For the countless young lives he saved, for all those young teenagers feeling alone and somewhat lost, I shall remember him with love.

Such sad news. goodbye Major Tom.

Love to all

Like your friends.....

David Bowie, through his Ziggy Stardust persona, was very influential for me. He was one of the first indicators that I had that I was not alone - that I was not some freak, some pervert. Ziggy Stardust showed me that it was OK that I was different from everyone else I knew, and that maybe, just maybe, I could be who I truly was inside.

It took me decades after that first inkling to admit to the rest of the world who I am, but thanks to David Bowie I was able to at least face myself and admit to myself that down deep inside, buried underneath all of the crap my parents and society was heaping on top of me that there was a very scared young lady trying to survive.

Thank you Ziggy - you will be missed more than you will ever know.

Dum Vivimus, Vivamus

Saw him at his first Glastonbury

such a long time ago. Another age entirely.
Then saw him at the Albert Hall with Dave Gilmore singing Arnold Layne.
I still listen to Ziggy on a regular basis.

The number of British songwriters who've had a more lasting influence on rock music throughout the world can be counted using just your thumbs.

When I heard of David's death, this track immediately came to mind. It's from his 1977 album Low, and in my opinion it's one of his finest.

He really was an inspiration to me in so many ways and I never got tired of his music.
My heart goes out to his wife Iman and them that knew him and fans everywhere.

A few nights ago I had a dream some wacko had shot him for the supposedly "Satanic" content of his new album BLACK STAR, which I've been listening to a lot. When I saw the news I was weirdly relieved that his was a far more normal and less sensational death, as horrible as it must have been...

sad hugs, Veronica

Rest In Peace - David Bowie.

When the release of his latest album was announced on the TV News on Friday there was a video clip accompanying the news item. 'He's looking Old and Tired' I thought to myself and otherwise dismissed it.

Then this morning (Monday) his death was the lead item on the radio news, even on the classical music station to which I listen, and I had a sudden flashback to the last music video that Queen produced before the death of Freddie Mercury. In both cases, when viewed in retrospect, it was obvious, there to be seen for those who bother to see, that the person was ill, very ill. In Freddie's case it was AIDS/HIV in David's case it was Cancer but in both cases I had ignored the obvious when I should have seen it for what it was.

Rest In Peace David, you brought pleasure and enjoyment to millions and now you deserve your chance to rest.

John.

I have changed my next episode to acknowledge him

I have managed to get seventeen, or was it eighteen, David Bowie titles into one paragraph.

This is my tribute to a man who greatly influenced me in my earlier years - we were both born in the same area of South London, neither of us too long after the second world war - rationing was still in full non-flow and many street areas were still piles of rubble.

Please don't have a go at me if you feel that mentioned paragraph is a little contrived, it shall be my hommage to him.

I shall post it in an hour or two, my #060.

David, I thank you.

May his family not suffer too much.
