In response to a recent post by Angharad...

I read the blog Angharad posted about the doping issue in modern cycling and it is a sad truth to face. However, I did happen upon an article about an elderly cyclist that is putting quite a few of the "current crop" of professional cyclists to shame. The gentleman in question is 100 years old and recently set a 14.4 mile an hour pace over the stretch of 100km (62 or so miles). Admittedly, I don't know much about cycling, but I do know being able to set, and keep, a pace like that isn't anything to sneeze at. Never-mind the fact that he did it at his age.

Looks like Armstrong is worse than we thought.

The evidence seems to be stacking up against the former champion cyclist, as a cheat and a serial doper, although anything Tyler Hamilton said I would dismiss as coming from the mouth of a real slime ball.

I suppose one has to view it in context, and many of the teams were doping or turned a blind eye to it; and if you wanted to beat the dopers, you had to dope too, because no one in authority would listen. It's no excuse, it's still cheating and should have no place in sport.

Olympic Closing Ceremony

What an incrdible Olympics it has been. Well done to our neighbours in the UK for putting on such an event of that scale! Plus you had Russell Brand singing I Am The Walrus and Imagine by a huge choir, need i say more? It was all amazing and i'm gonna miss not having something to watch every day! Go on Katie Taylor!

Crossing a boundary

This is special. There was a dicumentary on Oscar some time ago, about how he has lived with the loss of his legs in childhood, and come to dominate 'disabled' running. There was also a long, long argument combined with a lot of research into whether his new legs gave him a competitive advantage over intact athletes.

Wiggo Wins!

Just got back from a nice walk around the local area, checked the news to see if the TdF had finished...

...and yup, it had and there were no unforseen calamities, so we ended up with the perfect result as predicted for the past few days: Cav won the stage, Wiggo won the race, and Froome was second.

Congratulations to all three!

Next stop: a certain quadrennial sporting event... which starts on Friday evening for most, but Wednesday afternoon for the footballers (!)

Another sporting gender controversy

This has to count as one of the most bizzare stories ever to come out of the world of sport:

A female Indian athlete who won a gold medal at the 2006 Asian Games appeared in court on Friday charged with raping her former lover who has alleged that she is actually a man.

Pinki Pramanik was remanded in custody for 14 days to await trial on allegations that she repeatedly raped her female live-in partner.

Armstrong accused of doping (again!)

It appears as though the US Anti Doping Agency can't leave Lance Armstrong alone - they've written a fifteen page letter to him littered with yet more allegations dating as far back as 1996, claiming a "pervasive pattern of doping" over many years.

Unsurprisingly, Armstrong has hit back: "I have never doped ... These charges are baseless [and] motivated by spite ... These are the very same charges and the same witnesses that the Justice Department chose not to pursue after a two-year investigation."

Wiggo takes the Crit du Dauphine again

For those with an interest in things cycling, Bradley Wiggins has just won the Criterium du Dauphine for the second year running, and on current form could be a good bet for the TdF, for at least a podium place or possibly (dare I say it) an overall win. If so he'd be the first Brit to do so. This win also places him third in the UCI rankings, with Team Sky, the top ranked teams. Yep, cycling's full of rankers!

Well done, Brad.

Angharad.

Masters Weekend

Since this is the Masters weekend, I thought some might want to read my take on the tournament. The first 19 chapters are the best part. The next four are strictly an 'add on' and will probably morph into a complete tale some time in the future.

Cycling in the UK?

Hi

As some of you know for a long time I've been suffering difficulties with my health, most of the issues have centered around my hands but most recently I suffered a stroke that I'm still recovering from, during my time in hospital I was informed that evidence had been found of a previous stroke (I had no idea).

High school PE

It's been a *lot* of years since high school, and I find myself needing a better idea of what sorts of things they have the kids doing in PE these days. Especially at the start of the year, and at the start of the second semester. Both boys and girls PE.

Heck, I'm not even sure what sports practices would be going on those times of year (Sept/Oct, and Jan/Feb)

So if you have recent experience (either yourself or your kids, let me know. It's for some of the story plotting I'm doing.

Best line from the Daytona 500

"Hello Jet Track Dryer. My name is Juan Pablo Montoya. You killed my car. Prepare to die!"

Another great one: How many NASCAR drivers does it take to kill a jet track dryer? Only Juan.

Thank you, thank you. I'll be here all week. Try the veal, tip your waitress.

Jogging for the first time in five years
(this is a Working Girl blog)

I took the advice of some of the people who wrote comments in my previous blog, and decided not to take up my office-mates' offer to shop today. I really wanted to - reeaaally wanted to, but I think they're right and it's the smarter thing to do, even though it makes me a bit sad.

So. Instead, I decided to go out for a jog at seven this morning. I haven't done any serious exercising for five years, since before transition, actually (though I'm not exactly a sporty girl, I did bike for fun a lot before), but I thought I'd start exercising this morning and burn up some of this leftover adrenalin from yesterday.
